    Hi, Welcome to WindowsBBS.

    Try this:

    1. Insert your WinXP CD
    2. Go to Start > Run. Type in: Expand D:\i386\accessor.in_ -r C:\Windows\Inf, hit OK

Where D:\ is your CD drive, and C:\Windows\ is the drive & directory where you have your OS installed.

Note: If you've installed a Service Pack (1 or 2) after you installed Windows XP, change the command as follows:

    Expand C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\accessor.in_ -r C:\Windows\Inf

In the same file? Are you sure you are using the right version of the file? What I mean... is this SP2? If so, how did you apply SP2? Is it on your CD, or did you get it from Windows Update?

    New error code!

Hi Arie, thanks alot for your help. The Windows XP, Service Pack 2 (SP2) was installed from a CD that I got from Microsoft. Since I followed your instructions when I try to access the "Windows Components" listed in the "More Options" section of the "Disc Cleanup for C:" system tool, I get this new message ( Setup was unable to open information file accessor.inf. Contact your system administrator. The specific error code is 0x2 at line 2088999411.) I installed your instructions just like you had them written, should I try both lines? Thanks so much for your help, Jim

No, since SP2 was included on the CD, the 1st option I gave should have done the trick.

See if running System File Checker will help.

    error code!

Hi Arie, maybe I mislead you a little? Sorry! I had two seperate CD'S, one was for Windows XP, and the other one was for Service Pack 2, (SP2 ) I don't know if it will make a difference or not. I will try the system file checker. Something is not right here at all! Now I have an unknown device in the system devices list of the Device Manager! The wizard cannot find software for it because it can't recognize the hardware. Every time I boot up the found new hardware wizard starts but can't find it! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Do you have any ideas on this? Thanks for putting up with me, as usual I really appreciate your help. Jim

OK, so you have to extract the file off the CD with SP2.

Start > Run > cmd > Enter - a command window will open - type cd\ > Enter to change to the root drive, then D: (where D is your CD/DVD drive) and then type the line Arie posted.

BTW - I am hopeless with DOS - before my time :) , but that should work.
