I have installed a Conexant D850 56K modem in a Dell Inspiron running VISTA 64bit Home Premium. The modem works in an XP 32bit machine.

Driver installed OK and there are no apparent conflicts in Device Manager (no !'s anywhere)

I am getting an error 633 when I try to connect. Telling me that it cannot open the port. It indicates that it is running on Comm 3 but I con't see where to change this to another comm port.

Any help is welcomed and appreciated. TAI

The media .INI file refers to an unknown device type.

The driver is not installed correctly or wrong driver used. Check for updated modem drivers at Dell site.

Thanks Tony... I did that and didn't make any difference. Same error.

No conflicts according to device manager

I take it that it is a PCI internal modem, if so have you tried a different PCI slot.
Can you lay a hand on a external modem, my personal experience in the past was always in favor for a external modem.

yes thanks, we tried the other PCI slot.

I am thinking that I might have to break down and call Dell to buy one of their modems then it can become their problem :D
