Not sure what you mean by "access to normal mode" ... do you mean is everything back to normal? The answer is no ... the Windows Network Diagnostic log still shows the same errors, except now I'm getting both a 12029 error and a 12002 error for HTTPS.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and click Scan to run express scan. Click OK in pop-up window to allow scan.
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, select Complete scan.
• Click the green arrow [IMG] at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, in the menu, click File and choose Save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
• Copy and paste that log in the next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

NOTE. During the scan, pop-up window will open asking for full version purchase. Simply close the window by clicking on X in upper right corner.

Post fresh HijackThis log as well.

I ran the express scan, and nothing was found. I'm now running the complete scan.

What browser do you use to access secure sites?
Did you try another browser?
We'll try to fix this issue in a moment.
I don't think, it's related to any infection, because your computer seems to be pretty clean, but let's run another scan.

1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Disable your active antivirus program.
2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

• Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
[*] Archives
[*] Mail databases
6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

I use IE8 almost exclusively, but I do also have Safari installed, and I have the same problems with both. They seemed to crop up all of a sudden about two weeks ago - it was fine in the morning and then later in the day I was having problems. I don't believe I installed anything new between those times. I did access a program that I hadn't used in a while (ooVoo - a webcam program) so I thought that might have had something to do with it, but prior to my original post here I uninstalled the program to see if that helped and it didn't. If you want me do do some uninstalling/reinstalling of browsers let me know and I will try that.

I will try those new scans later when I get home from work. Thanks again for all your assistance.

TFC ran - didn't take long - and then requested a reboot, which I did. The program didn't start up again after the reboot ... did it run fully? Also, there doesn't appear to be a log - should there be?

I am one hour (and 26%) into the Kaspersky scan, so it will be a while before that one is ready to post.

Take your time...
When Kaspersky is done, you can run this TFC equivalent:

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Done.

The Kaspersky scan did not find anything ... the report was empty.

I ran the ATF Cleaner.

I am still having the same internet access problems ... so I suspect it is not due to malware. Do you have any other suggestions?

Most likely not.
Let's finish cleaning first, so we're sure, your computer is totally clean.

Verify your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
Update, if necessary.
Uninstall all previous Java versions, through Add\Remove (Programs & Features in Vista).

Your computer is clean :)

1. Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore ".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C: ")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

2. Restart computer.

3. Turn System Restore on.

4. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

5. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

6. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

7. Run defrag at your convenience.

8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

9. Please, let me know, how is your computer doing.

Well, hopefully all of that effort on both our parts did some good for my computer, but unfortunately it didn't fix my problem of not being able to access certain internet sites. The Windows Network Diagnostics still shows errors 12029 and 12002 when trying to access HTTPS websites. If you have any suggestions on those problems I would love to hear them.

I also have a couple of follow-up questions ... your post above mentions trojans. I don't recall you saying in any of your reviews of my logs that any trojans were found. Did I have one?

Secondly, can I remove/delete all of the cleaning programs you had me install?

Thanks.

You had some infection, but nothing serious, so I suppose your passwords should be fine.
As for programs...
Keep Super and 'Bytes, run occasional scans.
Run TFC, or ATF weekly.
All others can go.

As for secure web sites..
I can give you couple of links. If they don't help, you'll have to start new topic In "Internet" section.

Surprise, surprise ... my computer ran a windows update, installed some patches, and now for some reason my programs work again. I did have one other question for you ... can you recommend a user friendly freeware program to clean out my startup directory and/or registry so my computer doesn't take so long to boot up?

Thanks again for all your assistance.

I'm glad, your computer is back to normal :)
Registry cleaners are definitely NOT recommended.
We already eliminated all unnecessary startups, so your slow startup must be caused by something else.

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer ", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties ")
