Not sure if this is the correct forum for this post but I couldn't see any better/more correct ones.

I want to sell a laptop and will uninstall all applications (except the operating system) and delete some data files including text files which contain sensitive.

There are some (payware) apps which are supposed to safely delete files (over write the disk) so that no one can 'undelete' them but I am wondering if -

    Delete all files then
    Defragment the disk then
Copy a lot of huge files (eg image files and video files) and then delete them.

Would this effectively overwrite any previously deleted file (my sensitive data) so that it can't be undeleted?

Unfortunately just copying large files to the drive and then deleting them will not ensure all the areas you want to over write will be overwritten.

FileKiller is a free program that will do what you want to do.
