Windows 7 has a feature or transferring data files from your old XP or Vista to the new 7 - it is a simple USB cable with some software - Called Easy Transfer cable - now I read a review on Amazon which said this wont work with an AMD chip. I am looking at the Belkin. Is this true? If so is there another brand you suggest for this?
    Thanks

Instead of purchasing a special cable, I networked XP and Windows 7 together, and set XP to share D,E, & F partitions where I keep music, photos, files, etc.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I thought I would throw this at you in case you wanted to try it.

Here is a link that will help you avoid some of my networking mistakes. There is also an embedded link to Arie's networking article in post # 2...

Easy Transfer Cable is nice in that it copies and sets up your email accounts if you're using Outlook and maybe others...

Mine worked OK going from XP to Vista but I couldn't get it to work going from Vista to Win 7.

I haven't used Easy Transfer in Vista, but it is my method of choice for Win XP to Win 7 or Win 7 to Win 7.

As Steve said, it brings across settings that are not easily/coveniently set up otherwise. One I would note is Wireless network settings. Something else, may not be terribly important, printer drivers and any network drives you have set up.

I always use Easy Transfer at work, although I have never used a cable. I prefer to use the network...if the network is fast, otherwise I use the "save to drive" method. Do you have an external drive?...You should have one for back-up.

Yes Mattman I use an external drive for my B/U in fact I just installed Nero 12 which has a very neat tool for that you set it once and it backs EVERYTHING the first go after that it automatically backs up any changes - the files it uses are compressed and priority to Nero however that is why I also back up important files to a flash unit. I did use a network at first but I wanted to have a second option.
    Thanks
