    Hi Fang,
    I see your point, but:
That implies a dual boot menu, no?

I don't know enough about Vista to say that an upgrade is the only circumstance under which a Window.old folder will appear, and so far the evidence is that in this kind of scenario it happens as well.

When I installed a beta Vista Ultimate, that wasn't an upgrade, and a Widows.old folder was present. Annoyed the heck out of me because of it's size.

Ok i may have confused you guys a little bit.

My original XP installation was on my E:/ Drive.
I didn't want to fill up my games folder with Applications so i Created a new Programs Files Folder on my C:/ Drive.

When I installed Vista (not an upgrade, a separate installation), It moved the my documents and settings and Program Files Folders into Windows.old.

In my case, it isn't really that big because it doesn't contain my XP installation, but i believe that if i had my XP install on my C:/ Drive (where i installed Vista), that it also would be moved into Windows.old

So now, as I mentioned earlier, XP's Program Files now run off Windows.old, so basically, my XP would never have been erased and would still be usable if I ever wanted to install Vista and XP on the same partition. This is what I predict, I havn't done it yet but i think i have enough evidence unless proven wrong :D

Hopefully, this has made it a wee bit clearer, and sorry I didn't explain all this before, I was up all night playing InkBall ;)

    Hi Magia,
    Yep, you confused me.

    Not was, is.

So Fang's point is well taken - Vista found files from a "previous" OS and treated it as an upgrade.

    I disagree.

True, not all of XP would have been erased - Program Files / Docs and Settings are not the OS, they're user files, but it also wouldn't be accessable for use the way you lay out. That Windows.old folder is there to save any files from a previous installation for use by Vista.

When you're in XP, that's an additional path for XP to access its files from the E partition.

ok not to confuse ya'll, but I thought that win XP required itself to be on the C: drive or was that 98? I know Vista can run from any letter drive. I use to switch the drive order in the bios to fool the windows installs.

I see your point and am enlightened :D

So would there be a way to install XP into a XP folder and Vista into a Vista folder on the same drive? because both XP and Vista use the same folder for their installation...WINDOWS

    Hi Magia,

    If there's a way, I haven't seen it yet. http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=56032&highlight=Windows.old

    Hi Fang,

You wouldn't, unless you would have done it this way: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Vista-Windows-old-47133.shtml

I went back over my notes that I made for the Vista Beta install and that Windows.old folder that I posted about was particular to the beta's.
