Go back to post 14 redownload it. It is zipped so you will need to extract it before it will run.

Don't use the System Configuration Utility if you don't have too.

It's already been downloaded. It comes up with a small window called Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin with a series of tabs about startup options. Is that it?

When I type in Startupctl in Run it gives me the same message.

The Mike Lin tool is StartupCPL, not startupctl. It can be accessed from the Control Panel and will be titled Startup.

    Wait I'm baffled.

I'm asked to type in startupctl into the Run... section. It says it Windows can't find it. It's the same on this laptop I'm using currently.

I redownloaded the link from 14. After extracting it gives me Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin . But that's not what I'm after? Right?

Hello Rockster2U. Which of the two can be found in the Control Panel? Startupctl or Startupcpl. Either way I can't see either of them or anything labelled Startup.

Rockster is correct. That was my typo.

    Just run StartupCPL.

Yes Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin just go into each tab and untick all. They can be turned back on by putting the checks back later.

    Okay step 1 didn't work.

Now following the second stage but my PC doesn't have a Display Adapter option to extend in neither normal mode or safe mode.

    Uh Oh!

Then I am even more interested in how in how it runs in VGA mode. This may be the problem.

We now need specific info on your computer. What brand (HP Dell etc), model etc.

    Download and run
    http://www.gtopala.com/en/siw.exe

Once it opens in left panel go to Motherboard and click it. Copy and paste all back to us.

Then on left click Video and paste it also back to us.

Ok while you are running in the VGA mode.

Is it running OK in VGA mode?

    Post back current status.

I am researching updates for your Motherboard.

Have an errand for next hour.

I've never been able to get into Safe Mode or VGA Mode via the F8. I've tried tapping it frequently, I've tried holding it down but I can never seem to do it.

I've always used Safe Mode through running msconfig and have selected it from there. Is there a similar way that I can enable VGA Mode?

You must not be hitting the F8 soon enough or enough times.

    Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done.

Keep tapping but do not hold down.

If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.

We need to get there and into VGA Mode to do this test.

But here is an easy way to get into Safe Mode. If you use BootSafe to go to Safe Mode it reboots every time to safe mode until you use Bootsafe to select full mode.

    http://www.superadblocker.com/downloads/BootSafe.exe

But this will still not get us the Advanced boot menu wee need.

So try the F8 key again.

I just got back from errand am still researching your Motherboard.

After trying that F8 job about 30 times something happened. I got something like this page http://www.playtool.com/pages/safemode/safemode.html which is what I think the idea was. But it didn't have the VGA Mode option nor a couple of other things. It had a count down to start Windows normally, or Last know config that worked and the same three Safe Mode options.

Which ever way I go, I get a flash of a blue screen with a couple of lines of white text which lasts maybe an 1/8th of a second and it starts back again and boots back onto that same screen that I described above.

So it's all a bit of mess now. Might be time yet again to reinstall XP from scratch.

    Ok Well!

Try the Chipset and Bios update.

Make sure to backup all your data. Documents photo's and email etc.

Lets hope these will fix it if not it may be time to do a fresh install.

I'm not going to be able to do both Mike. Not in its current state. I can't log on at all in any mode.

The fresh install might have to be what's next. I know the problem is still going to be there when it's done though. I must have installed XP 5-6 times in as many months. It always ends up pretty much the same.

Or maybe it's time I got a new PC all together, I don't know.

    OK

Download the Chipset and Bios on another computer and burn them to CD and they should install in safe mode.

    If that don't work then....

Try a repair install or if you have to a clean install, if you think that will make it run for a while, then immediately do the Chipset and Bios update.
