Since you mentioned before running Spybot, you can open it in advanced mode from your start programs menu. When Spybot Search and Destroy is open, click on the Tools button , then select View Report. You can leave all the checkboxes as is, or uncheck all except the startup list and processes list, then click the green View Report button on the the bottom. That will get you a listing that includes all your startup programs and running processes . The list can be copied and posted here.

For example, here is the report I get when I uncheck everything except for Startup List, BHO list and Process list

To copy the report I jjust used the mouse to highlight everything, then used the Ctrl and C keys to "copy ", then the Ctrl and V key combination to Paste to Notepad (or to the reply window here)

    Nothing much there.

What about a Spybot report, with Internet Explorer running, to include the BHO list (Browser helper object ) and Process list? I'm afaid I'm running out of ideas, unless you want to unnstall IE6 and go back to IE5.5.

    Dear Lis,

If you reinstall the Internet Explorer in Windows 98, it will get back
to the preinstalled version. The currently installed IE6SP1 will not be
reinstalled. Then you will need to reinstall the IE6SP1 separately.

It is important to us that we answer your question. If you need
further assistance, please reply to this message, we will be happy to
    help you.

    Sincerely,
    Vishal

Does the above make any sense?

"If you reinstall the Internet Explorer in Windows 98, it will get back to the preinstalled version. " That doesn't make sense to me.

    Didn'tyou already have IE6sp1 installed? Didn't running
the IE6setup.exe in Windows Update Setup Files reinstall IE6sp1? Check in Help About Internet Explorer for your version number.

PS. It might not be a bad idea to:
    1. UNinstall Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 from Add/Remove Programs
    2. Reboot
    3. Re-run ie6setup.exe (or re-download IE6SP1 if you prefer) to reinstall IE6sp1.

BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM DISABLED during the entire process !!!

Norton Antivirus has been known to interfere with Windows Updates.

IE6SP1 is currently installed. If I uninstall this browser what browser do I use to re-install. Stupid question?

Does everbody agree that I should uninstall IE6SP1 and re-install? Or should I download IE5.5? All those in favor-----
    Thanks for your interest.:p

    Hi Lis,

While you wait for a second opinion (always a good idea!) you can find the ie6setup.exe file in Windows Update Setup Files and right-click it, select Properties, then go to the Version tab to check the version number and post it here.

Here are detailed instructions to uninstall and reinstall IE6 (using safe mode, a way to insure that the install is done with nothing running in the background) which I found with a groups.google search. It's for your information. Notice it says, when you uninstall, you select the option to restore the previous Windows confiiguration. At that point, you should test IE5.x (whatver your previous version was) then follow the rest of the instructions, if you would like to reinstall IE6....either re-download from the internet or use your C:\Windows Update Setup Files\ie6setup.exe.

    Hi,

You may uninstall Internet Explorer 6.0 to restore to the previous Internet Explorer version. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
    2. Select Internet Explorer 6.0 and click Add/Remove.
    3. Choose "restore to a previous Windows configuration .... "
    4. Complete the process.

If the issue is fixed in the previous version, you can reinstall Internet Explorer 6. At this time, please follow up the following steps.

    1. Click the Start. Point to the Settings. Click to open Control Panel.
Click to open Folder Option. Click the View tab. Click to choice Show Hidden folders and files. Click the Ok.
    2. Check the windows\inf folder. If you found the Windows\Inf folder contained many inf files that are 0KB in size, please delete these 0 byte
    files.
    3. Create a temporary folder in the C drive such as iesetup. Connect to the Internet. Download Internet Explorer 6.0.
    4. Choose Save this program to disk. Click OK. Locate the iesetup folder and then click Save.
    5. The ie6setup.exe file begins to download to the iesetup folder. After the download has been finished, locate the iesetup folder and then double
    click the ie6setup.exe.
    6. Select I accept the agreement. Click Next. Select Install Minimal or customize your brower. Click Next.
    7. Expand the Minimal box and then select Full. Click Advanced. Select Download Only and then click OK. Click Next.
    8. C:\Windows Update Setup Files will be listed as the default download folder. Change it to the c:\iesetup folder. Click Next. Click Next.
    9. After the download has been finished, all setup files of Internet Explorer 6.0 are in the iesetup folder.
    10. Disconnect from the Internet.
    11. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.
    12. Click the Advance button. Check the "Enable Startup menu" line. Click Ok.
    13. Reboot the computer. When the startup menu appears, choose Safe Mode and press Enter.
    14. Click Start. Click Run. Type c:\iesetup\ie6setup.exe /q in the Open box and then press Enter.
    15. After the installation has been completed, reboot the computer.

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6

By the way, I think I found out what HP support meant by "If you reinstall the Internet Explorer in Windows 98, it will get back to the preinstalled version. " I think they meant, when you REINSTALL WINDOWS 98, it will take you back to the preinstalled IE version. You don't want to do that, though, since from all I've read you will have a load of file version conflicts.

Sorry I've been out of pocket ............. catching back up - I think this IE6 thing is being kicked to death. Assuming you reinstalled from your wu setup files as advised a couple of days ago, lets give this thing a rest.

First thing I'd do is pull critical updates out of your start up folder . Second thing would be to get that "log" started.

My log indicates that 98% of the freezes (Iexplore not responding) occurs with OutlooK Express open and clicking on an hyperlink in an E-Mail message. Will this info change the toubleshooting procedure? First time a microsoft online engineer replied to an issue. I may be confused?

Now we are getting somewhere - too bad it took three pages to flush it out. First thing is to reinstall IE6 from the setup files. You can follow the MS engineer instructions or go back several days and follow mine; either way, it will get you there. Then do the Windows update thing and install IE6 SP1. Then test drive this and maintain your log. Depending on your response, we may go into some of your Outlook Express settings, but reinstall your browser as instructed. Seems to me, we were at this same point a couple of pages ago. Absent anything on your part, I will bid you good luck and farewell.

This is from your posting from June 23rd:
So then it lookss like you already did a reinstall of your curent version of IE6, Is that right?

To determine your current version of IE check in Help, About Internet Explorer - if you see 6.00.2800.1106 then it is Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 - for details on finding your IE version see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q164539

In the event that you ran ie6setup.exe with Norton Antivirus running, go back and re-run it with Norton Antivirus DISABLED, and and all other back ground programs CLOSED, either from the as ystem tray icon, from within the program options or with a Ctrl/Alt/Delete and End Task. Alternately, you can boot to Safe Mode to reinstall IE, your choice, as suggested by the MS engineer, (from a newsgroup post I copied.

Regarding Norton Autoprotect, it is important that this not be running when you reinstall IE. There should either be a system tray icon OR an option to UNcheck Autoprotect in the Norton Antivirus program settings, which can be reselected after IE6sp1 is reinstalled.

    Good luck,

    Alice

Previously I reinstalled IE6SP!. Folowed instructions with Norton disabled and issue remains. The PC never freezes (Iexplore not responding) when I open the browser or search around on a web page. Log indicates that the freezes occur when I open Google or click on an hyperlink in an E- Mail message. Hopefully no one is getting bored with me and my PC's problem? Its only a machine. Have a nice weekend.

    Hi Lis,

Just to make sure we're on the same page:

Does clicking on ALL hyperlinks in Outlook Express e-mail messages freeze IE ?

When the freezes occur, you see "iexplore not responding" when you do a Ctrl/Alt/delete? What other programs are listed in the Ctrl/Alt/Delete box when IE hangs up?

Please post one of the Outlook Express mail links that freezes IE if it only happens on certain hyperlinks, not others.

What exactly do you mean by opening Google? Do you mean a google toolbar? I don't have that myself.

As a troubleshooting method, you can disable third-party browser extensions in Internet Explorer's Tools, Internet Options. UNcheck the option, then click "Apply" then "OK ". I believe it's on the Advanced tab (I don't have IE6 so I don't have that option myself). That would disable the google toolbar and other browser helper programs you may have installed.

Before doing that, it might help if you open Spybot with IE running and go to Tools View Report and check the running processes and BHO lists, and post them here (I mentioned that before, I guess you missed it)

P.S.: Here is a copy/paste of a newsgroup post I found with a groups.google.com search, that includes more IE6 troubleshooting ideas:

    Hi Ron,

If your Internet Explorer works properly for most web pages and this issue just occurs in some specifice pages, this problem may be not related to your Internet Explorer, but is caused by the scripts.

If this problem is related to your browser, you can perform the following general trouble shooting steps:

Step 1: Delete temporary Internet Files
    -------------------------------
    1. Double click the Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop
    2. From the Tools menu on the menu bar, select Internet Options, and then click on the General Tab.
    3. In the center section, Temporary Internet Files, let's click on the Delete Files and Delete Cookies button.

Step 2: Reset all the Internet Explorer Settings
    -------------------------------------
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click Menu Tools, Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults.
    4. Click the Security tab, click each item, and click Default Level.
    5. Click Privacy tab, change to slider bar to Medium

Step 3: Uninstall Internet Explorer Plug-ins
    ---------------------------------
    1. Run Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools, Internet Options.
    3. In the General tab, click Settings.
    4. Click View objects and delete all the plug-ins.

Step 4: Disable 3rd party extensions
    ------------------------------
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools, Internet options.
    3. Click Advanced, uncheck "Enable third party browser extension (require restart) "
    4. Click OK and restart the system.

    Best regards,

Good stuff there Alice. It may also be wise to run MFlynn's DOS cleanup procedure for 9X and to install Adaware 6.0 and Spybot search and destroy to clean up any other garbage in there.

    Thanks Rockster for the recommendation.

Seems like everything else has been done, so why not. A problem in the swap files or temps could do this.

If you want D/L the WinMe Defrag so that after these cleanups you can do a scandisk and defrag as these cleanups will clean but open free space on the disk thereby causing fragmentation.

The Me defrager is more advanced and faster. If you do get it do it first before the below.

    Get it here: http://www.boogiejack.com/software/winmedefrag.zip

    The Cleanups
These are for 95 98 only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)

    del c:\windows\*.swp

    deltree /y c:\windows\shelli*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\temp\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\history\*.*

    deltree /y c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

deltree /y c:\windows\taskmon.exe (optional but recommended)

deltree /y c:\windows\applog (only if you do the taskmon above)
    ____________________________________________
Then boot to safe mode and do the following

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

NOW do the scan and defrag WHILE IN SAFE MODE!

    mike

    Guess not! :)
    Thanks Rock.

Lis, I feel that a good place for you to start would be to answer my questions, Get another Spybot report and post it here to include, at a minimum, the running processes and BHO list, the follow steps 1-4 from Laura Zhang's IE6 trouble-shooting list. If you have a problem with Step 3 (Uninstall Internet Explorer Plug-ins) you can skip it for now, but anything that you right-click and remove from C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files (this is the same as "View Objects" in Internet Properties General Tab, Settings) can be added back again, next time you are on a web page that needs the plugin.

I agree, assuming Lis is OK with it (many people fear Dos)

Take it step by step, Lis. Mike knows his stuff! Just so that you know, you can get out of Dos and reboot to Windows with a Ctrl/Alt/Delete. To boot to safe mode, see: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q180/9/02.asp

Since performing Laura Zhang’s procedure, less step 3, the log has no new entries. Would it be safe to say "issue resolvedâ€? Shall I be alert for a couple more Days?
Road Runner techs told me it was a software issue and said "goodbyeâ€. HP said "perform a system recoveryâ€? Lot of chair time, pain and suffering, as you know, to reinstall the data and software. Alice, bottle your knowledge and expertise and FedX me a case. Mflynn with 2500+ posts is incredible. Take more time for meals? Are you the current record holder? Unable to see a (Iexplore not responding). I am so elated. A little reluctant but I will say "case closed" Thanks. :) :) :)
