I have been having a problem with downloading on Windows XP. Whenever I try to download a program file it freezes at 99% and won't finish. I have tried everything I can think of. I have disabled my anti-virus, turned off the firewall, tried internet explorer and firefox, and reinstalled windows. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks

Hi amarch11, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed? Do you have Windows XP SP3 installed as well?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

My version of Internet Explorer is 8 and I was using the latest version of Firefox when I tried that which I believe is 3.6. I do have SP 3 installed. I have also put in the system information that I know.

Ok thanks. Since you are running IE8 try this, click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Internet Explorer (No-Addons). Once IE8 opens with no add-ons can you visit a website and download a program now?

Thanks for your response. I just tried that and it still doesn't work. Just like before it gets to 99% and then just sits there.

Hmm. Ok try Resetting Internet Explorer and see if it makes any difference.

What security software to you have installed? What firewall are you using?

If you still can't download any programs reboot the computer, press F8 on startup and select Safe Mode with Networking. Once Safe Mode with Networking loads, run IE and attempt to download a program from there. Any difference?

I have Symantec Antivirus 10 installed. The only firewall is the windows firewall. I have tried disabling both and it doesn't change anything. I also just tried to start in safe mode and the same thing as usual happens.

Having Symantec Antivirus installed could be the problem. I am not a fan at all of the security products by Symantec. I would try uninstalling Symantec Antivirus altogether and then see if you can download a program.

I unistalled Symantec and it still didn't work. I did however this weekend notice something odd. It only won't download .exe files from certain websites. I was able to download from Microsoft fine but I still couldn't download things like Java.

Very interesting. How is your computer on harddrive space? Do you have more than 15% of free disk space? This may be a shot in the dark but try clearing your Internet cache. Open IE8 and click Tools< Delete Browsing History and make sure all the checkboxes are selected except for preserve inprivate data. After thats done click the delete button.

Also when you download a file have you tried both the Run and the Save option? Is there any difference?

I have about half of my hard drive free. I tried to clear my cache and that didn't work. I have tried both saving and running and there is no difference it gets to 99% and it freezes.

That does sound like a (security) program is responsible.

So you have no other security program installed other than Symantec Antivirus which you already removed?

Is your computer using a hosts file?

BTW when did this problem start? Is it fairly recent or has it been going on for a long time?

I am not sure if I have a hosts file. I do not have any other security programs that I am aware of. At least nothing that didn't come with Windows. It started about a week ago. I had no problems before then.

I agree something is blocking completion of downloads.
Consider some of the additional suggestions from Symantec.
Manually uninstalling the Symantec AntiVirus 10.0 client

Are you running through a router?? If yes ..
Would it be possible to connect computer directly to cable/DSL modem. Want to eliminate possible rogue settings/firmware issues with router. Turn off computer and modem, connect computer directly to modem. Turn on modem, wait a few minutes, turn on computer. Travel to problem sites/downloads.

UPDATE ... just read your "My System" status. You are not running a router, connected directly to modem.
    Consider my first suggestion.
