I know this has been discussed but I have not found the way to do it. I have searched the MS update sites and searched here as well.

When I go to the Windows Update site it seems that the only way I can download SP2 is to install. I would like to download and save the 75MB version for future use.

    Hi Daniel!

I've heard about this smaller download that should be forthcoming but have never seen any evidence or at least a link to the place from which this information eminates.

SP1 and SP1a were only downloadable as a full file version and they were at some 125 MB. Since SP2 is cumulative (includes SP1a) and is said to be the biggest SP ever, I am a sceptic of the alleged smaller download.
In addition to this, Microsoft is worried about server infactation and in concequence, release SP2 gradually. Why would they delay the release of a smaller package which would reduce the load on their servers?

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers is the only downloadable version that I have seen and the only downloadable version that I have seen any proof of from Microsoft. I believe that this is it ...... ...... 99 % sure.

What I have heard/read is that Microsoft discourage people from downloading the full file version because an online install will analyze the computer and tailor the download in order to minimize it. That would in most cases reduce the download to some 75 MB. I also believe that the 75 MB installation would have a fully updated SP1a installation as a prerequisite. Installing SP2 on a never updated XP RTM would probably be much larger.

I have not seen it mentioned as a download to save on the local computer.

    Dan,

If you set AU to the Notify before downloading and Notify Before Installing, that gives uoy a chance at the SP2 setup file and also you can hold off the installation. At the update, choose "custom" download.

    Hi Christer,

Don't agree. There is no indication of that anywhere. Suppose the install finds no SP1 or SP1a, what would have to happen? I have seen no one writing in any forum "I didn't have SP1 and had to stop the download and install SP1 ".

Why that big 266 MB size for the Networking? I've had one answer: Elements for developers/enterprise deployment - Pro - Home. The AU download will install only one of the three.

    Hi Charles,

I assume that the download would be larger than 75 MB, maybe 150 MB but it would download a tailored installation for the specific computer and not refusing anyone.

No computer needed everything in SP1 since all files for pro and home were there. In SP2, in addition to that, all files for the tablet version and all other versions are there.

A fully updated SP1a would need less than a never updated RTM and any computer at an intermediate state would get what's needed and the size of the tailored download would vary accordingly.

    Hi Christer,

You may be right and there is evidence for your point. How "tailored" is the nub of the question.

    Daniel,

Is there an option to download to the local computer and save to the HDD or is it a web install only?

If it IS possible to save it to the HDD, then I suspect that the setup files would only work on Your specific computer and would not be adequate for use on any other computer, unless it's identical to Yours.

Let us know what You find out!

Thanks Daniel. I have been waiting since day one for the Auto Update to work with no luck. I don't know what the BBS girls and boys would do without fellows like you.

Thanks for keeping on top of things...

It appears that this may be customized to my computer. When I start the download it shows 97.20 MB to be downloaded instead of the 75 MB it stated when it scanned my computer.

It does not appear that I can download and save as that option has not been offered and I have my AU tab set to download and let me choose when to install. From what I can tell it is going to ignore that and install anyway. If I let it try, I will post back the results.

SP2 is now available in english from Windows Update Catalog and the size is 266 MB for RTM as well as SP1.
I haven't checked any other languages.

    Dan,

To Christer's point - re the bigger install size = 97.2 MB. Do you have SP1/Sp1a? How up to date are you with patches?

I am up to date with all critical updates that have been offered, except one small update to the Task Scheduler that caused me a problem and I took it out. My install disk included SP1. I am not sure about SP1a.

When the update site started offering me SP2, it quit offering me the Task Scheduler update.

    Hi Dan,

Then its maybe the larger download size for XP Pro installations.

Have seen one Home install so far, and it's 75 MB's.

    Guys,
there are more factors to consider.

SP2 includes Media Player 9 and DirectX 9.0 and if those haven't been updated (not critical) then the download size will probably grow. I still have MP8 and DX8.
