I have an old application that I run in compatibility mode (Win XP) that for some reason wants to run as administrator. While the privilege level box is unchecked in the compatibility tab of properties, it still wants admin mode. How do I get that turned off? TIA.

I know for a fact that it does not need admin privileges to run. I have and old XP system I tested it on. I think it has to do with compatibility mode.

As I said this is most likely a compatibility mode issue not the game per se.

From what I've read. This game was released in 2002. Might not be compatible with a 64bit operating system. I have MS Flight Simulator 2002 Professional and I can't get it to run on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Operating System, but I can get it to run fine on a Windows XP Pro 32bit Operating System.

The game runs fine. I am only concerned with the requirement to run it as admin.

Hi gw1500se. The issue with games that came out when Windows XP was released was that if you were using an administrator account then every program that you ran, already was running with full administrator privileges under Windows XP. In Windows 7, if you wanted to run a program with administrative privileges you had to right click on the programs shortcut and select Run as administrator.

If you run the program without using compatibility mode and without running it as an administrator, does it open?

No. It always prompts with the dialog box to allow changes. I also checked the registry and the string does NOT have the RUNASADMIN option set.

Then try just right clicking the program and selecting Run as administrator and see what happens.

If the program does not open properly then let me know if it throws up an error message.

If you have a copy of XP lying around, you can run the program in virtual XP using Oracle Virtualbox. I have a program which refuses to run on anything other than XP and I run it under virtual XP.

I agree except graphics performance is poor. Again, what I am really trying to figure out is why compatibility mode requires admin rights.

Thanks but not applicable. However, I guess it does reinforce the theory that there is no solution.

There may be but, you'd first have to figure out why it needs admin rights. (And why I was looking for a copy to test). As William said on that page:

It needs admin rights because it is running compatibility mode. As I said way back when, it does not need admin rights when running on an XP platform. Although it does not run properly on Win7, it launches without requesting admin rights.
