    Good day!

I have problems with my PC, the display is flickering on and off along with that monitor power indicator light. It usually happens after 5-10 minutes after I boot Windows, but sometimes it happens right after I login.

Is this a sign that my graphics card already gave up or giving up?

    SPECS

CPU: intel celeron d 2.4ghz prescott
    Motherboard: p4m266a-8235
    ram: 512mb ddr266
    g-card: geforce2 MX-400 64mb

    Thanks

Hi Nowhereman, If you go to top left of BBS screen you will see User CP. Click on it and follow instructions to fill in your System Specs.

You don't tell us what type of Monitor you have and I would suspect that it might be a failing PSU. Neil.

Check the video connection at back of computer.
Your issue us usually caused by:
    bad connection
    dying monitor
    dying video card

Why does my system specs not appearing? I already edited and saved it.

I have a 500w PSU and a 17 inch Samtron 76DF/77DF CRT monitor. I bought the power supply a month ago and is brand new.

I already edited and saved my System Specs in the UserCP, why is it not appearing?

BTW, my monitor is a Samtron 76DF, 17 inches CRT. And my PSU is a one-month old generic 500w.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

Your graphics adapter has a NVIDIA chipset, do you know the manufacturer of the adapter? NVIDIA only make the graphics chipsets, not the graphics adapter.

I suggest you go to the graphics adapter's website (or the system manufacturer's website, like Dell, HP, etc) to find the drivers recommended for your adapter.

The monitor can black out (or blink) just before or just after you log on. That is the NVIDIA graphics manager taking control over Windows standard graphics control.

Your graphics adapter is a little old (but I have a Geforce2 MX-400 64mb running on my sister's computer very successfully). You will probably need to find the best match of drivers and NVIDIA graphics manager to your adapter.

How well do you get to the desktop after logon (when you can start using programs)? Do you have to wait until the timer stops before you can start running your programs? It may be due to how fast the graphics manager is loading.

    PNY send you to NVIDIA
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71_2.html

If the drivers won't install or there is no change, you will probably need to uninstall the old drivers in Add or Remove Programs. When you reboot and the Add New Hardware Wizard starts, click Cancel and run the new driver installer when you reach the desktop.

If you have any problems, go to the Startup Options menu (F8) [where you select to go to Safe Mode] and select VGA mode.

Does the comp have onboard video? many systems use a graphics card but also have onboard video. If have one, try that & see if still have flickers. If so, the monitor is dying.

Hey guys! Sorry for the late reply.

The display won't show, even when starting my PC. No POST message, nothing.

Monitor power indicator just blinks as if the PC was off.

And unfortunately, I don't know the card manufacturer.

And how do I change to onboard? My PC has one, I think.

Plug the monitor into the onboard VGA video port if exists (usually blue).

    Update:

I tried uninstalling the graphics card drivers and my pc worked 3-4 hours before shutting down completely.

So, maybe the problem is really in the G-Card?

Did you find an onboard video connector? For the onboard graphics to work, you will need to open the case and (physically) remove the add-in graphics card.

I don't think there's anything definitive, I've had to remove addon cards (or set BIOS) on some systems but generally just connecting the monitor to onboard/addon activates it.

Maybe, the more recent motherboards I have found turn off the onboard graphics automatically.

I tried looking up the specifications of the Elitegroup motherboard in NowhereMan's profile, but the model there is that of the VIA chipset. Other motherboard manufacturer's using the same chipset have Pro Savage 3D AGP 8X onboard graphics. NowhereMan, if you open the case, look for a model number on the motherboard.

If the add-in card is suspect, swapping it for another would be the ultimate test, but I would be wary of getting drivers and graphics "manager" software corrupted. I carefully uninstall the drivers/software for one before switching to another.

Did you uninstall the NVIDIA drivers/software in Add or Remove Programs? I don't usually recommend this, but you could go to the Windows Update website, look up "Optional" updates and you should see the NVIDIA drivers there, try those (they should be easy to uninstall if they don't work).

I hope switching to the onboard graphics works, but as I said, having various old drivers and software hanging around would be my worry.

Thanks for the replies! I borrowed a Card from a relative and that problem never happened again.

    Problem marked as solved.

    Again, thank you.
