Well, I changed the BIOS from PCI to AGP and tried rebooting in safe mode. It didn't make a blind bit of difference! Still out of range on both connectors with all monitors. I also noticed that I still had the Nvidia display when I booted in normal mode. I can only conclude that having the PCI card in the slot must override the BIOS setting.

At this point I am throwing in the towel. I will just hope I never need to boot in safe mode. If it ever becomes a matter of desperation, I will yank the card and hope that works.

Well you need to change the Init Display First option to integrated if that is an option and then connect the VGA cable to your motherboards integrated video card instead of using the dedicated Nvidia card.

Then see if you can access Safe Mode using your motherboards integrated graphics.

After that last stupidity I don't really trust myself any more, but I am fairly certain the only options were AGP and PCI. I did look carefully because of everything that had gone before, but of course anything is possible. I will check again the next time I boot the computer. I can't reset at the moment because of things in memory.

I have had a second monitor plugged into the integrated connector the whole time and nothing has ever shown on it.

I have carefully gone over the BIOS again and I see nothing that relates to integrated display. There is only the choice of AGP or PCI slot, neither of which seems to make any difference. I have a second monitor plugged into the integrated display but it never shows anything.

I have also gone through all the other menus and I cannot find anything that appears to be related to the display used. Since I managed to miss the AGP/PCI selection so many times I cannot say with confidence that there isn't anything else, but if there is I can't find it.

I already checked in the pictures that you posted and the Init Display First is the only option that I see.

Its probably because you have your dedicated video card plugged into your motherboards AGP slot so the system is looking there for a video signal.

If you want to use the integrated video chip then in this case you will need to remove the dedicated video card from the computer completely as this will force the machine to use your integrated graphics as there are no other display options available.

If you want to leave the computer alone then I understand but hopefully with the computer booting off the integrated video chip, you will be able to see if Safe Mode works.

Thanks again for everything but I will leave it as it is. I have had this machine for quite a long time and I'm sure I must have booted into Safe mode in the past before I changed the display, though I don't have an actual memory of that. I have had enough bad experiences of Windows doing unexpected things for no apparent reason so I don't want to push my luck. Everything is working fine at the moment so I think I will just leave it that way. If there ever is a pressing reason to use Safe mode I will pull the card and hope for the best.

Ok fair enough. Do you have any other questions that I can help you with or would you consider this thread resolved?

That's a good question. I have had this problem before. I would say the thread is closed as far as I am concerned, but it isn't quite resolved since I didn't exactly find the solution. If someone else with a similar issue ends up here, they might be disappointed at the lack of definitive answer. However I am happy to mark it resolved if you want me to.

As long as you are satisfied that your questions have been answered then feel free to mark it as Resolved since you have made your decision to keep the computer as it is.
