Hi Marjorie, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try this method to get check disk to run. Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Command Prompt. When the Command Prompt window opens type chkdsk /f /r and hit enter. Check Disk will ask if it can run on the next reboot. Type Y and hit enter. After thats done close Command Prompt and reboot the computer. See if it runs.

If check disk doesn't run when you reboot the computer, then reboot the system again and press F8 on startup to bring up the advanced boot options menu. Once the boot options menu appears select Safe Mode and hit enter. After you boot into Safe Mode repeat the above steps to run Check Disk from a Command Prompt window and see if it runs after you reboot from Safe Mode.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

My question is why are you running check disk in the first place? Are you having a problem with something?

    Thanks Terminator, I'll try that.

Mr Bill....my system is sluggish and files spread around so I do disk check and defrag every so often

    Regards Marjorie

Regardless of operating system, system "sluggishness" is rarely caused by the types of errors repaired by chkdsk. It's more likely sluggishnes is caused by:

malware (start a post in Malware forum here)
    not enough RAM (add RAM)
misconfigured system (optimize it by removing unnecessary startup services/programs)
    fragmentation (defrag disk)

Hi there, Well I tried Safe mode to enter check disk, but that did not work. However, I do have 13 items in start up, so I'll clean them up. I have plenty of RAM, my son thinks it is my hard drive (I am presently storing my files on a data stick).

    Thanks everyone

P.S I am running Windows EX Home Version 2, System pack 3; 4 CPU 200 Ghz, 200 Gb Ram I have 57 gb of space on system.

Hi Marjorie, you've got the top guys trying to help with your problem, but unless you follow Evan's request (Post #2) to fill out your 'System Details' I think it will take some time.
Can your son help with filling out this info? I think you have some of your specs mixed up. Cheers Neil.

Marjorie, from my research CHKDSK /f does not make make many changes, you should run CHKDSK /r. Try looking up "Error Checking" in Help and Support, that might explain more about it.

Your hardware information is not consistent with a home computer. 200GB of RAM would be nice :), 2GB would be more expected.

See if you can fill in the information for Evan and Admin to make the "My System" in your WindowsBBS user profile.

I agree, doing an error check (CHKDSK) before running a defrag is the way to go. What do you mean by "No access to NTFS volume. "? What is the error message?

    Matt
