    Earlier

I typed chkdsk C: /F I got a message that I could not do that as the volumne was in use. But could be set to do on the next restart.

I just tried it again.I typed chkdsk C: /F Did the restart bit and it did its thing.

If you run chkdsk /f and continue to have problems, try chkdsk /r so you get a more complete exam and repair of the disk.

And I've seen "command" mentioned here. If you are doing start~run~command to open the window, you shouldn't. That starts an old 16bit version of the command window using command.com. Better is start~run~cmd to use cmd.ext to run the newer 32bit version.

Note that this is not the case with non-NT OS versions.

A glance at the top of the DOS window should show you if you are using cmd.exe or command.com. If not, execute a command (DIR is fine) and then press the up arrow. If the command is placed on the screen again, you are using cmd.exe (unless you've seriously tweaked the environment command.com is running in). Or try to arrow the cursor back into a command you've typed to edit it. If you can, you are using cmd.exe. If you erase what you've typed, you are using command.com.

I did some checking after reading your Post.

The properties of the shortcut to the Command Prompt in start~programs~accessories does points to and is what I use

    %SystemRoot%\System32\cmd.exe

But the top left of the Window says Command Prompt.

Your up arrow check works as defined.

By start~run type cmd, it shows as using cmd.exe.

I did a start~run Command and got a nice clear message about a Memory manager already running.

So. Does this tell me that I am using CMD.EXE when I use that shortcut ?

Worked for me the same way but, again summary went by too fast to read well. Not sure then if all errors fixed.

I am either not understanding or missing some thing.

    chkdsk C: /F

Where did you type this ? And are you typing it correctly ?

#1--Did you open the Command Prompt Window

    or

#2--Did you type it in the Start~Run line ?

Which one you use does make a difference.

Using #1 the info stays on the screen until you type "EXIT." And I believe it would indicated if errors have been fixed. I can not verify it that is true or not as I have not had any errors as of yet.

Using #2 the info does disappear VERY quickly.

If you use chkdsk C: /F and it says you need to restart and you enterY then with next restart at the proper time in the startup sequence it will come up with a blue screen with white lettering. And if there are no errors it goes quite quickly also. And does not hang around too long after.

I shock myself up a little last night. I apparently answered Y and when I restarted the machine after coming home from shopping up came CHKDSK.

    BillyBob,
    Used #1 Command Prompt
    Typed in: chkdsk C:/F
read: "cannot run because volume "....... etc
    typed Y
read: "this volume checked vext time "......etc
    EXIT
    RESTART
white on blue, "Cheking file sytem on C: "

at end of which a summary that was on the screen for about 2-3 seconds.

That all looks good to me.

And it seems that we are reading from the same page in the same book.

Even the short 2-3 seconds after the white on blue screen.

I also wish it would stay there longer. But I have no idea now to extend the time.

HHHMMMMM !!! let me try something.

Maybe hitting the PAUSE key MIGHT hold things up a bit.

Will be back with either an answer or a DEAD machine.

    Later

It's a pain - even a 'speed reader' would have problems.

Suggestion - if you have a digital camers - snap the screen - works a treat :D

Read from the bottom up as fast as you can. It seems ridiculous to run this program and be given no information at its conclusion. There out to be a way to call up the report from elsewhere in Windows, but if there is, I don't know how or where. As fast as that screen flashes, you know M$ did that on purpose. Pete, I can't imagine sitting there with my digital camera waiting for the exact second to snap the pic, but that is a brilliant innovative idea that might actually work. LOL! "Thinking outside the Box!!" :D
