Can you be sure that it is all Directx related ?

Is this the same machine with the Video card change ?

Is it the same machine with the Mouse problem ?.

Video problems can .s.c.r.e.w. up anything BIG time.

Just one more little dig about "DX DIAG "

    One little hint from EXPERIENCE.

NEVER believe what DxDiag says unless something it is not working at all. I ran for quite some time with DxDiag telling me my drivers ( both audio and video ) were not Certified. If things are not working at all then attempt a fix.

The file that is updated is quartz.dll - DirectShow Runtime, which is not native to my system (Win95b) but was installed with Windows Media Player 6.x , mplayer2.exe

I'm assuming that the midi exploit involves Windows Media Player as the associated application? Microsoft didn't make that clear.

I've UNchecked midi in WMP6.4's options/ formats since DirectX9 is not an option for me. I now have AudioStation2 associated with midi. When opening a midi file in IE5.5sp2, the old Win95 media player, mplayer.exe now opens instead of WMP6.4/mplayer2.exe.

I'm not sure that will do the trick for me but it will have to do.

    Hi BillyBob,
No this is not the old Beast with the dead Mouse scenario, this happend with my "Pride  " PC.
Regarding the dead Mouse problem I thought I might try and get a Adapter PS2 to 9 Pin and try it with a PS2 Mouse, got nothing to loose.
Yes the DX DIAG caused that, well not exactly DX DIAG only adviced me to reinstall and as soon as I did the lights went out. Unceremoniously.
Back to my Question should I update to Direct X 8.1 or stay put on 7 ??
I would like to get some opinions on that, I am not a Games Fanatic just the odd one here and there.
    thanks

If 7 is working with no related problems than I would leave things as they are.

But I will repeat. If you do go with a higher version make sure your Video and Audio drivers are up to par that best you can. And that does not mean that they need to be the latest and greatest. Bad Video can kill the best of software.

On one of my machines I had to re-install both video and audio after installing DX. The older versions of DX anyway.

A game may be very happy with Video and DX. But at the same time DX says the video is not right. If all is working OK IGNORE what DX ( Microsoft ) says.

I was browsing through the threads when I found something significant an update for Direct X. I didn't have a particular problem with Direct X but installed it to be current, and 'pow' a huge increase in performance. Thank U for bringing up the issue.
