Doh! This gets worse! Did you make a note of the error messages which popped up after "BackWeb" was removed? If so, post 'em.

You should by able to launch the Repair Tool by clicking Start - Run and typing:-

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

The above is case sensitive - so copy and paste to avoid errors.

It'd probably be better to resolve the BackWeb issue before attempting to fix IE. Maybe you could clean those entries again and post the resultant error messages prior to proceeding with the repair?

Some good news :) After all that messin' about, I suddenly thought it might be my ISP. So, I dialled up using a different ISP on my list and, whadya know, IT WORKED!!!!!

So, I will have a bone or two to pick with my regular ISP over this.

Anyway, it's been fun and I've learnt a few more things along the way  Hope you have too ;) Maybe I'm not such an idiot after all LOL...........

    Till next time.............

    Thanks for the help.

Yet another bit of good news :)

Solved the BackWeb problem too. Got a nice new Logitech keyboard for Christmas and it was the Messenger programme that came with it that all the BackWeb stuff was to do with. So uninstalled that, Spybotted again (is there such a word!), rebooted, no abnormal messages came up.

What am I? I await your replies :)

    >>>Phew! Glad you've found an answer<<<

    Yah me to
But i cant think of it being a isp thing more like a to much traffic on that isp and becouse of spyware trying to phone home
    at the same time.
Backweb on my computer came from maker hp
useless ,it was tricky to uninstall and kept coming back, let me no if that happens.
If you uninstalled ie6 and it reverts back to a version before i think 5.5 it wont have the repair tool built in please do get 6 back but through win update . then try the repair tool dont use it
just to see if you still get that error message --Im thinking you will

Good luck PS didnt we recomend a spyware remover a long time ago!!!

Don't worry Lon, I'll be back if I've anymore probs. I have already reinstalled IE6, done the repair thing, got rid of all the spyware. Hopefully I won't have the same problem again. I'll let you know what the ISP has to say when I hear from them. It's definitely something to do with them, not my "perfect" computer! :D

For anyone who has read all these posts, I have solved the problem with my ISP. All I had to do was go into Internet Explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options > Connections, highlight ISP, click Settings and disable the Proxy Server. All is working ok now.

No idea how it got established. It was a recently set up connection. Don't know if that had anything to do with it.

BackWeb hasn't come back. Regularly to my spybot checks now.

Happy New Year to you too.
