    Randy,

My guess is that You´re comparing apples with pears right now. That old P3 based system is running Win98, isn´t it? It would be vvveeerrryyy slow running WinXP. WinXP puts much greater demands on the hardware than Win98.

I have installed WinXP on a number of old Win98 systems owned by my friends. The hardware on all of them met the minimum requirements for WinXP.
One was a P3/500MHz - 256MB RAM system which became unbearably slow on WinXP.

My own system (specs at the bottom) was running WinME from the time it was new. When I migrated to WinXP the system actually became quicker, the feeling was supported by timing boot times and other operations.
My conclusion is that anything below my system specs will probably be a "no gain" situation or a disappointment on WinXP.

Well, I think that the tech support was pretty committed to resolve Your problem and that is on the plus-side of the equation.

However, I would personally not buy an OEM machine no matter what it says on the front. I would discourage others from doing it too and especially a few brands ...... Compaq isn´t the only one with a less than good reputation.

A little bit about pIII CPU's

(as example) I have a Asus P2B-S MDB. - it has the clock multiplier and bus speed jumpers and was a fun board for overclocking tests with pII's.

The pIII's have the clock multiplier hard wired internally. - I can set the board jumpers for clock multiplier to any setting and system will run at the speed set by the CPU. (I can still play with the bus speeds...)

Some BIOS will allow you to tweak the speed settings some, but Compaq BIOS has always been a bit different.

A 1.3GHz Celeron is a P3 tautilin core running at a 100Mhz FSB (instead of the Coppermine 133 FSB)

mem is key, drive I/O is second with Xp
