my nabor had a dell that has the same i5 chipset so i swaped the ram chips and it still just does the same thing. I check for the pins in the usb ports, all look good. I did notice the hard drive bracket doesnt have any mount screws at all cause the bracket holes dont line up, when i bought this the guy said he put a larger hard drive in, had 500g and he put a 750g for more movies. The hard drive seem to be secure even without the two screws. any other ideas?

Yes. As I mentioned before, it could be due to overheating, it is or has been wet, failed/failing capacitors and/or possible electrical damage (short/ESD/lightning). The only way to really tell if it's due to one of these problem would be to take it apart and start looking/sniffing for damage. However, if you're not familiar doing something like this, recommend taking it to a shop for some hand's-on diagnostics.

Ok, I opened it up and looked and smelled for something burned, found nothing and the innerds look very clean. So I put it back together but still doing the same thing, it gets to the first screen with the scrolling bar that goes about 1/4 within a half second then shuts down. Just seems weird to me that it does this without hitting the on button. Just plugging it in or installing the battery without being pluged in but if the battery is in and i plug the power cord in, the light on the front corner comes on then off, it wont go to the first screen at all.

Is 500GB HDD the original one that was in the machine or did you neighbor go from a smaller HDD(example 320GB) to the 500GB. What is the service Tag number.

The two thoughts that immediately come to mind are:

Overheating - CPUs heat up real quick. Without adequate cooling they can literally start to melt within a few seconds. That's why systems are designed to immediately shutdown when the CPU reaches a certain temperature ... so that: 1) it won't destroy itself and, 2) start a fire.

Liquids - Any electrically conductive liquids inside live electronic equipment allows electrical currents to travel across unintended paths, which can immediately short-circuit (kill) all of the electronic components the liquid comes into contact with.

I got a call from a friend with a Dell laptop last year. He went from 320GB to 1TB. Shortly after the upgrade he started having heat issues. I told him to reinstall the old HDD. Problem solved. He wanted a bigger HDD so I suggested a 500GB HDD. He called, told me that he installed a 500GB HDD and that the machine was working great.

Well its working now. I took it all apart and everything looked clean and no signs of any burning anywhere, the only thing was some dust clogging the vent so I cleaned it good, put everything back together and it started up. went to a black screen with some info on the cpu, ram, cd. I got this from a guy off craigs list for my wife, the guy told me he upgraded from the 500g to the 750g hd due to he used this for movies while he traveled. Its really in great shape overall, looks and this is the first problem it has had. Its the first laptop we have that can play anything, movies, utube videos without any pausing or freezing so we really like it. My wife plays games with it, not like the video games but stuff like gsn and pogo site games and it works so much better than the acer that is a 2009 model. This is a 2011 dell. She took it to the farmers market to use it to take payments and this is when it quit working, after she got home, she said it worked fine at the market. So really I'm not sure what fixed it. Anyway thanks for all your help. I tell all my friends about this site.
