    'dude,

I agree when it regards history and typed URLs but ...

... regarding the drop down in Windows Explorer - Search Assistant, I find it convenient to delete "search strings" that were either misspelled or of no future use and to be able to do that individually. Individual file searches are also a nuisance whenever they pop up (or is it down).

TheElderGeek suggests a method of deleting IE6, then go to his site for a download of IE6. If I delete IE6, how do I get to his site, or any site, to download IE6?
I do have my Win XP Home reinstall disc so I assume an old version of IE is on there, right? I can use that and then go to Microsoft for updates. Don't know why he'd offer a link to install IE.

You won't be uninstalling IE6 completely, merely changing the Registry key to say that it isn't installed.

    re-installing IE

    S-dude
I'd like to clarify the re-install of IE.

I first go to the Registry key you listed just prior & change the value from 1 to 0. Got that.

Then install IE6...Do I install whatever I have on my XP Home disc, probably IE4 or 5? Then do an update from microsoft online?

And you are sure this will not delete my Favorites list?

    Thanks

You will want to install IE from the MS website so as to get the latest version.

Your Favorites should not be affected since they are stored in your id folder. Back them up if you want to be extra cautious.

    They're at C:\Documents and Settings\<your ID>\Favorites

The site for the IE6 browser is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&displaylang=en

I think the main Windows Updater site would probably work too.

As I said before, you aren't uninstalling it, you are merely changing the information in the Registry to say it isn't installed. You'll still have it installed and it will still be as usable as ever.

Changing that registry value, does not uninstall IE, nor does it make it inoperative. It tricks Windows Installer to believe IE isn't installed and it will get installed on top of the current installation. Hopefully it will fix Your problem by overwriting the old files with new files.

    xort,
    good luck ...... :) ...... !

    'dude,
    I forgot to ask:

Do You mean typing the URL but not hitting <Go to> or <Enter> ?

It's now past midnight and a new day. The "0 days setting" cleared all history from yesterday, including TypedURLs.

I meant - if you delete a url and muck up the sequence, then reopen the browser and type a valid url, and press go or enter, then close the browser and reopen it, you'll lose the "typing induced history" that you refer to as well.

That's why I said "valid url" since it won't get listed otherwise. And it won't get listed if you don't punch Go or Enter. :D (nor will you get $200 :D )

    Forgive my brevity there.

    'dude,
    that's not my experience!

If I don't touch the down arrow next to the address field but type a valid URL instead, then all "not removed URLs" in TypedURLs will remain, plus the new one.

My guess is that, if You click the down arrow, then the list is loaded from TypedURLs but trunkated at the break point. If You don't click the down arrow but type a valid URL, then it will get in at the top in TypedURLs as url1 and the previous ones will get renumbered in sequence - very much the same as manually editing the value names (as mentioned in a previous post) but automatic.

Nothing to forgive! I tried to reread the posts and found out that I myself ...... ...... have been clear as mud.

As You pointed out in an earlier post, this is a non issue since we will use the <clear history> button and send it all into cyberspace.
