My system is set to defrag automatically ; suspecting that it had not been completed or wasn't working ( because it is taking so long to boot up the system when I turn it on ) I turned off automatic defrag', and tried to run it 'manually'. It gets as far as 35% completion of analysis - within say 15 minutes , but never gets any further - even after several hours. ( I have had three or four tries - always ith the same result.

    Any suggestions, please ?

Try www.auslogics.com I use it instead of MS Defrag. It seems to work very smoothly. Just make sure nothing else is running in the background. If you're on Broadband - disconnect while the defrag is working. Cheers Neil.

    1. "Try testing your drive with the manufacturers diagnostic tools "
This one doesn't work for me, since my manufacturer no longer exists ( Evesham Technology). There doesn't seem to be anything in my system already provided - e.g. "Search/disk diagnostics" and variants of this all produce nil result.

    2. With great respect Neil, I went and looked at www. auslogics.com and when I read "registry cleaner" I shrank back....
Can anyone else confirm that this is safe, before I end up needing to do a clean instal to repair over-enthusiastic "corrections" ?

Use SIW to determine your HD manufacturer, whilst you're at it you may as well take the time to complete your system details...

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

Hi Geoff Hands. I have used the Disk Defrag program from Auslogics for many years and never had any problems. I would highly recommend this utility over the Windows Defragmentation program. While Auslogics does offer a reigstry cleaner, I don't use it since I don't trust registry cleaners. Download Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.

OK, I give in ( joke). I have used Auslogic and done a defrag. Then as a matter of interest, tried the system defrag (which is one thing which gave me a clue that things ain't working right... Did it OK this time. And Office now loads quickly - so all seems well.
Have also done what is necessary with system specs.
I will go and tick the resolved box.

    Thanks all.
