    OK, getting confusing here...

Create a System Repair Disk on a working laptop/PC

There's no way. What you have to do is boot off the Windows DVD. But if you can't get your system to boot off the DVD, something is seriously wrong.

Well, maybe when the reason you can't boot off the DVD is because the DVD drive has failed, you'll have a shot at booting off a floppy...

    Arie & Mattman,
I am now totally stumped - even attaching a 3.5" floppy with a Boot Disc and setting the BIOS to look at the FDD first, nothing happens at all.

This problem all started with the laptop seemingly have an "Over Current" issue on a USB port and I now notice that when booting into the BIOS by resetting the CMOS there is an "Error" message before going to F2, which expands to:

    0701: USB Over Current on HC/Port - Bus: 00H Dev: IDH Fin: 00H / Port : 00H

I hope I've transcribed it correctly but, even so, I haven't a clue what that means or how to fix this error.

Should I toss the whole thing into the garbage or is there a fix?

Thank you mickzer - I shall get the screwdriver out tomorrow and check if I still have a soldering iron.

    Ah, happy days.

I WILL come back to tell of the result but give me a couple of days of fooling around.

First I have to say heartfelt thanks to all who have tried to help with this problem.

Alas, it appears that the problem lies within one of the USB ports and, try as I might, I cannot find my way into them in order to effect a repair. Having undone all the screws holding it, removed all the panels on the underside, extracted the HDD, the case still refuses to budge.

I shall re-assemble it as best I can and maybe seek some professional help - otherwise it get consigned to the great workshop in the sky, forever awaiting repair.

Again, thank you all and I shall mark this "resolved "
