Yeah I thought of that mistake when I was on my way home:)

So it was able to run GMER with "Devices" unchecked and in regular mode (the log is below). Interestingly I had to copy the contents in GMER and close the GMER program before it would let me access notepad to paste and save it (got an error about insufficient resources to complete request if I tried to do it before closing GMER).

To my relief, GMER log looks good too :)

It looks like, we're pretty much ready to wrap this long journey up.

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
    Restart computer.

    =================================================================

    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    1. Disable your active antivirus program.
    2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      [*] Archives
      [*] Mail databases
    6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

Post fresh HijackThis log as well.

Sorry it took so long to reply but the Kapersky scan failed last night so I had to run it again today. Below is the log and a fresh Highjackthis log. Oh yeah and the temp file cleaner did request a reboot. Computer is running better but still seems to be sluggish.

How much RAM do you have?

As you can see from Kaspersky scan, all infected files are in your Outlook mail.
Since I don't want to mess up your messages, you'll have to sort it out.
I suggest, you save mails, you want to keep and clean out all Outlook folders.

Now, you don't have any AV program running, so I suggest you download and install ONE of these:
    - Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
    - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

I'd also suggest uninstalling ThreatFire, which sometimes will slow a computer down.

    ===============================================================

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.
    • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

    ===============================================================

HJT log looks perfectly clean, but post a fresh one after performing the above.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop (circa 2004) with 1.5 GHz processor and 512 MB of RAM.

I was running PC Tools Spyware Doctor and thought that included a AV, but installed avast as requested as well.

I found Threatfire in this folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Useres\Application Data\PC Tools" but there was no uninstall option and I'm not even sure what/why it's there. Can I just delete the folder to get rid of it?

I installed JavaRA but when I clicked the "Open Webpage" option nothing happened, which I'm guessing is due to an internet explorer error (it will not open or load when requested). I was able to use Mozilla to navigate to the download page for Java and it confirmed the most recent version was installed.

I also went through and deleted all old mail from sent and deleted folders in Outlook that was archived (I'm assuming that is where the majority of those infections were). Any other ideas here?

I'll run Kapersky again tonight and post up a new highjackthis log after getting threatfire taken care of as well.

    Thanks again for you help.

    Very good :)
You can delete ThreatFire folder and I'll see from HJT log, if its service is gone.

Now, you'd definitely benefit from getting another 512MB of RAM. That would, most likely, solve your sluggishness problem.

Couple of things happened or at least I tried to make them happen since your last post. I uninstalled PC Spyware Doctore with Antivirus since I'm now running avast. I deleted the folder with Threatfire. I picked up 1g of RAM which brought it up to the 1g and a 256mb. IE still won't start (but I'm guessing that's another problem), so I used Mozilla to try to run another Kapersky scan yesterday. The first try went well until about 85% complete when it failed. After that I noticed that when I tried to rerun the scan my CPU usage for Firefox was consistently 100% and it wouldn't start the scan again. Not sure if this is still a malware issue or a general PC issue? Thoughts?

Those online scanner are picky sometimes.
    Instead of Kaspersky...

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

    • Disable your antivirus program
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
    • Click Start
    • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    • Check Scan archives
    • Click Start
    • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
    • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
    • Push Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

The ESET scan ran to completion (CPU usage was at 90-100% throughout) and didn't detect any threats so it didn't give me the option to save a log file.

    Thoughts?

Computer is running much better. I opted to pick up the additional RAM like suggested. Thanks again for all your help with this.

I was wondering if you had a suggestion as to where I should post my question about internet explorer not opening (when icon or quick start button are clicked nothing opens but it starts as a process in the task manager)?

I'm glad to see your computer doing better :)
Good luck and stay safe :)

As for IE issue, you can simply post at your Windows version forum.
