when i run you tube,or open any video...or run AVIRA ANTI CPU runs about 100% and locks up for a bit.

i play Mafia wars and it takes about 40 sec for things to run after i click on an item to respond.

i look at the task manager and the bottem item
system idle process cpu stays steady at
about 90 mem usage at 28k

    iexplore.exe user-runs cpu about 5-405.648K mem usage

Hi 401402, I would suspect Malware/Virus is your problem. Have a look at the Malware Section and look at the Procedure to Start your Post there. Neil.

I've just been looking at Specs and Reviews and wonder whether you have a large enough CPU for the use or whether you need to see whats running in the background.

CPU's in Dell builds seem to vary between 1.4 to 2.2ghz.
It would probably help others with experience on this Model if you filled in your System Details fully. Cheers Neil.

    How ?

Some nasties are very difficult to detect & even more difficult to get rid of. Rootkit infections are a very good example.

You should read this & post in Malware and Virus Removal section.

Your CPU might stay at 100% for a long time, but another reason could be that you have "run out" of memory.

The basic memory is RAM. You could need more RAM to run your programs, for both the programs that you run yourself and the programs that are running in the background (startup programs).

Standard Vostro 1700 came with 2 Gb RAM - probably the sweet point for XP.

Suspect the cause lies elsewhere - no harm in checking it out in the Malware & Virus Removal forum.

CCleaner is NOT anti malware. Its a cleaning utility.

401402, While I am no expert, you may try and clear your browsers cache, Mafia wars and U-tube are flash based and over time can gunk up the cache. I do not use IE so I may be wrong...just my experience from playing MW.

When you don't follow & don't respond, there is nothing much we can do to help.
