I have been having problems even after a clean install of XP-Pro. For example, yesterday about five hours after I closed out of the programs I was using, a gray program box appeared on my desktop. There was an OK box within it which I clicked to get rid of. I could not read the writing inside the box; so I do not know which program generated it. However, I could not read some of the writings under my desktop icons. Usually I have to shut down or soft boot in order to restore things until it happens the next time. I could not even read the print on the log off buttons. Avira, probably not the best antivirus, found TR/Spy.Zbot.avca within my Works files. Then, additionally, Virus Total found within the same file Trojan/W32.Agent.122880.AF. Are these actual malicious codes? I do not want to junk this computer if it is salvageable.

You have found some infections so it would be a good idea to follow the link below to have your PC checked for any other infections.

markmadrass: Thanks for your prompt reply; however, I cannot run MBRCheck. When I attempt to run it, a message appears in the command prompt: Error opening physical drive. What next?

If you follow the instructions in the link you will read that you should open a new thread in the Malware & Virus forum. That is where you will recieve the help you now need.

The MBR check error message is normal. If you read all of it you will see that it asks if you wish to run the next time the PC starts so you just type in Y and reboot.
