I don't know if formatting and reinstalling windows would fix this problem.

Maybe. But I do no think it is the OS itself.

Like I said, everything works fine if I boot up with the cable unplugged.

It seems everything else has been tried so I now have a Question.

Is there anything hooked to the other end of the cable ? If there is then the problem may be on the end that we are not looking at.

I ask because I see no reason for a problem with just the cable alone UNLESS IT IS BAD !!. . Because I do not believe there should be any real connections until something is plugged in at both ends. Or somewhere it the middle. ( jammed/shorted cable )

Have you tried a different cable ?

    software or hardware???

I have tried other cables. The cable goes to my wireless router which in turn is connected to the cable modem. This particular pc is hardwired (cat 5 cable)to a switch on the router. I'm typing this from the computer in question. As long as I connect the cable after I boot up, everything is fine.

Another thing of interest: At one point I was going to reinstall windows. I booted up from the CD and it loaded the set-up files. When it finished that I got a screen saying the compurer does not have a hard drive and set-up cannot continue. I think I have a definate motherboard problem.

I don't think your MOBO is bad. Aborting an OS install can cause some very strange problems. If it were me, I would do a backup image and run a clean install from the CD. Have it format the existing partition when the offer is made.

That's not to say a Repair Install won't work so I might even try that first just in case. It would obviously save lots of time. I have some doubts about the success though.

    Mr

It maybe a motherboard problem , but I have my doubts as it work after you plug in the cable and the MB works in safe mode.. has to be some that is conflicting at startup/setup .. Have you tried , by pressing F8 at startup , a step by step startup ?
Have you rebuilt all your Network conection ?
What does your BIOS say about you hard drine ?

What does your BIOS say about you hard drine ? I'll check

Could it be that my wireless router has gone bad? I will check it straight from the modem.

I may be 100% it the wrong here put I think a system restore from a point previous to the attempt at what the original post says would have been of great help.

If you boot without the cable, the reg is just saying " OH well such and such is not here so we ignore it. "

When you plug the cable in AFTER booting the reg is STILL ignoring it.

    PS
Take a look at my new post in Hardware ( Bad Fan ?? ) and see what SR ( HOPEFULLY ) bailed my sorry butt out of this AM.

    YES !!!! WAY TO GO

Thanks for the report and we are very glad to read the good news.

The idea about the other end just happened to POP UP out of the blue. Glad it worked.

Lets hope it all stays well now.

Also I seem ( hopefully ) to have my problem solved.

Have a GREAT Day and enjoy.

A new twist to the story

Here is what happened, there seems to be a conflict with the phone modem. Earlier I disabled the onboard nic card and installed another one. That did not help so I removed it and went back to the original configuration because I got the router to work correctly. When putting things back together I took the phone modem out instead of the other nic card. My phones quit working so I discovered I had removed the wrong card. I reinstalled the modem card and the shut downs started all over again until I removed the modem card again. Now that it is removed everything is working correctly.

If I understand correctly. Everything is OK as long as you leave the Modem card out ?

If so. That reads like a POSSIBLE PORT conflict.

That is correct. Dell says they will replace the MB

My question is why would a port conflict shut a computer down? It won't stay on long enough to see the conflict and it doesn't show up in safe mode...

It is going to take someone a LOT more knowledgeable than me to answer that.

Did you disable Automatic Restart on System Failure? That may allow you to view an error screen to get further corrective information.

Yes, I disabled it but it really wasn't doing that in the first place. It would automatically shut down after boot up.
Would the Event Viewer have any clues?

OK, now I see. I was hung on the restart and it was shutting down.

I would hope the event viewer would chronicle any event that traumatic but you'll just have to look and hope.

Run eventvwr.msc and check all three categories.

As a very last resort, I'd still try a repair install and a clean install if that failed before I'd go to the MOBO swap trouble.

    Good luck.
