    Hi Jam

    10-4 on the Instant messengers.

Mcafee is there. It is all over the HJT log.

    It is another Slower-Downer.

We will clean up and prep for AVG Virus scanner.

    Go here do this:
    http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq.asp?frames=1&docid=68717
Notice there are entries for XP 2K together, XP alone but also for 98,95 and ME (skip do not do these).

Also some things may not be found on your computer since it appears Mcafee is damaged anyway. But do all that you can.

When that is finished do the below

    Download and install : http://www.hoverdesk.net/dl/en/RegSeeker.zip
    Then run regseeker

Choose Find in registry (click all boxes except Match whole word)
    In Search for:
    type
    Mcafee (delete all found)

then repeat for Network Associates (delete all found)

Still in RegSeeker in left panel click "Clean the Registry "
    First run "Auto Clean "
then run again and choose OK instead of Autoclean
    Delete all found.

    That should handle Mcafee

For more general cleanup in Add/remove look for any other old programs that you are sure are not needed and un-install them also.

    Then reboot
    Download and install AVG http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg75free_432a904.exe

Do the update until it says no more.

Then do a scan. This may find viri since the Mcaffe was not running. More cause of slow downs and problems.

After this some speed will be back.

Report back. Especially about what AVG finds.

    Mike

Ok, so after I took out all the mcafee stuff, I realized that it was from my aol saftey and security. So I reinstalled it.

I dont know what happened with the AVG, because I started the scan, and went to work. When I got home it was closed. Should I run it again?

    Hi Jam

Wish you has asked me first.

Just because it is from AOL, what does that matter.

Did you not notice the difference in speed and performance before you put it back on.

Well it needed to be removed anyway even if you intended to keep it, as I think the installation was damaged.

Now you have 2 resident/online active virus scanners.

This is not recommended as sometimes while trying to do exactly the same thing they can bump heads and cause problems. Also degrades speed/performance.

Likely if AVG found nothing it would exit like you saw.

To see what the AVG found rt clk the AVG icon in the stsem tray lower rt and choose Launch Avg test center.

Then in the left panel "Test results" then the date.

You should decide which Scanner to keep and uninstall the other.

I think AVG is at least as good but probably better that McAfee as a virus scanner. But AVG is one of the lightest for processor load. So on an older laptop like you have AVG would net you faster speeds and better performance.

If you decide to remove AVG it has a relatively clean uninstall just run it.

On the other hand if you decide to keep AVG you will need to do all the steps again to completely remove Mcafee.

    Good Luck,

    Mike

Ok...oops. I got rid of the aol virus scanner, but kept some of the other mcafee programs that came with the aol saftey and security, like firewall, spyware protection, and phishing protection.

I checked the AVG log and it said that no threats were found.

The computer is running noticably faster now.
