Freezes are often caused by faulty memory so it may be worth your while running a memory test, follow these instruction.

I would also try running chkdsk again now that you are free of infections.

I suggested looking at those processes which are using the CPU - the memory use will always be there whether or not the process is running.

I have ran the memory test and CHKDSK again, still no luck...

I'm also going to do some searching on Google Chrome and it's use (if any) of multiple TCP ports.

Sorry, the ones that are using the most CPU (still only 1 or 2) are explorer.exe and dwm.exe.

I still haven't found anything more about Google chrome, but when I type "netstat -b" into command prompt, it gives me about 50 listening ports open- that's gotta be the problem. Avast seems to be monitoring them all, but still, that's alot of memory it's taking!

Hmm - netstat -b is not listed in the syntax for netstat and no netstat variation will run on my box with 7 x64 although the program is installed, not even from an elevated command prompt.

Now that's real weird - it will run now

All I have done is look at the ports avtivity in my firewall (Vipre), now it works - go figure!

Ipdrummer - I have 79 active connections and no issues - don't think your 50 ports is an issue.

In the light of AVG fouling up more than once in the recent past it might be worth your while uninstalling it temporarily and substituting MSE. Just a hunch :)

I don't have AVG though, I have Avast. Of course maybe I have some remnants of it? I can't remember if I tried it in the past and just uninstalled it. I also uninstalled Avanquest Fix It, as that was taking up some serious memory too.

My bad - I glossed over Avast in your last post :( Never had a problem with that and use it on a couple in installations including a Virtual Machine.

I really have nothing else to add at this time.

    Thanks for your help!

I really think that my hard drive is physically damaged. I will probably try to reformat it to see if that fixes the "corrupted sector," and if that doesn't work will probably have to buy a new hard drive.

I have successfully installed the new hard drive and put all the essentials back onto my computer with no problems! It doesn't hang up anymore, I can move files around without it crashing, and everything's going well!

Now If I can only figure out how to put Windows 7 back on my computer..

How is the PC running if the OS is not installed or are you asking how to do a dual boot.

It's got Windows 7 on it, but only for another 25 days if I can't figure out how to activate it.

For the purposes of this thread though, my problem has been resolved!
