I am running XP Pro with IE 8. This is a new install, but there appears to be a glitch somewhere. I can be working and all of a sudden the computer screen will freeze. There are two buttons on top of my custom built computer tower, one is the power button, and the other is a long slender (1 1/4" long and 1/8" wide) button which I honestly don't understand what it is for. I do know you can push this button and it will reboot, once it reboots all functions go back to working normally. Does anyone have an idea of what may cause this and how to remedy the problem? Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help with a solution to this problem.

Hi puppypaws. The first thing I would do would be to download Process Explorer. Extract the contents in the zipped folder and then run the procexp.exe program. When it opens you will see every process that is running on your computer.

See if you can identify any processes that are using a high amount of CPU usage and causing the system to freeze.

If your computer has normal CPU usage then your computer could be overheating. Have you thought about opening up the case and cleaning out any dust that may have accumulated in the system? Having a lot of dust and dirt can lead to computers overheating and freezing up so I would check to make sure that the inside is clean.

I actually take the computer, open the case, and blow out thoroughly about every three months to keep excessive dust from building up. In the CPU usage case, there is no excessive drag. Can you please explain what the download can do for me if the CPU useage remains low?

Process Explorer allows you to view all running processes on your system and see how much of your system resources they are using. Think of the program as an enhanced version of Task Manager. If the CPU usage remains low then your freezing issue may not be caused by a software program.

Have you tried booting the computer into Safe Mode and seeing if it freezes up there? How often does it freeze up? Does the computer only freeze up when you are performing a CPU intensive task or does the computer freeze when the machine is idle?

Download and run Open Hardware Monitor. This program will show you your computers temperatures and you should be able to use this information to identify whether your system temperatures are within normal levels or not.

In your next post let me know what your system temps are which will give me a better understanding of whether we are dealing with a hardware or a software problem.

I would start by checking out the Event Log for system events that may tell you a little more...

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your System logs for errors.

I made a screen shot of my temperatures, can you attach in this forum, or am I overlooking this somewhere? I've been gone to a meeting, this is the reason I was so slow coming back into the thread.

I could screen shoot this as well if I could attach.

May I suggest you just post your temps here? Can't be that hard.

Your temps are fine. There must be some other cuase for your system to be freezing up.

If you could answer these questions that I posted in post #4 I would appreciate it.

The computer has not frozen since I posted the thread. I have not checked to see if it would do it in safe mode because it is so random I may never see the problem repeated. When this happens, I may have several sites open at once, but like I say this is somewhat random and has not happened since the thread was opened. You know the game, having a problem with your car, take it to a mechanic and it will not repeat. Then you drive home and the problem arises immediately.

    Computer Shutting Down

I'm running Windows XP Pro, IE8, in a custom built computer. This has a new XP install but appears to have glitches I've not seen before. I posted before about the computer freezing and the only way to get it started was to kill all power and bring it back. Amazing thing happened, after I opened the thread it never once repeated this problem. Now, all of a sudden the computer has begun to cut itself off (never seen this before). I've had it happen with me on more than one occasion. I happen to walk up to my wife while she was using the computer a few minutes ago, and just as I walked up the screen went black. She said this happened to me last night, and neither of us understand what my cause this type problem. The tower has a large power button that shows a green light behind it at all times, with another red light between the large power button and green light that blinks on occasion. There is a very slender button (1" long by 1/8" wide) on top of the handle above the power button and lights. You can push this slender button and the computer will reboot and work perfectly. I have one other problem that is also very confusing, there is a website for the county government in my area that has always opened without hesitation, now it starts to open but freezes. I can open any other county government website in the state within a second, but not this one. I can open the problem website on a laptop running off the router from the main computer perfectly, but not with the PC. This is really blowing my mind, does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be going on?

I would like to thank anyone that may attempt to help our situation in advance. This is a very confusing problem for both me and my wife.

    Thanks,

    Reid

Heat - buldging caps and failing power supplies are the three main culprits to random shutdowns.

If you open the case - do you see a lot of dust bunnies?

The random shut downs could be caused by the same problems that have been causing your machine to freeze up.

As Arie stated above have you looked in Event Viewer for any clues as to why the computer will shut down?

Does the computer shut down randomly while in Safe Mode?

I have never run a computer long enough in safe mode to know if the same problems arise or not. There is nothing in the event viewer that shows a problem, no red or yellow signals. I thought it to be very odd that the computer has not frozen since posting the other thread, but now it is doing something entirely different, almost as if something is telling it to shut down. I was 55 yrs. old before I touched the first key on a computer, did not know how to turn one on. I am 62 year old farmer; meaning I am not very knowledgeable on all this type technology. I really appreciate anyone willing to help me, but I am somewhat slow to a great deal of the jargon.
