[Active] Clicking on Start menu causes lock up

I was running my usual maintenance/anti-spyware software and the next thing I noticed is that when I clicked on the Start menu (eg to do a reboot), the top half of the vertical Start menu was all white (eg usually shows
Windows Catalog, Windows Update etc.) and the bottom half was properly filled in per usual (eg Programs, Turn Off Computer etc.).

In addition, the cpu (XP-Pro) was locked up and had to be exited manually using the Task Mgr (showed: "Explorer.exe Not Responding "). TM showed no open Applications or unusual CPU Processes usage.

I ran all the usual: Kaspersky AV, Spybot, Pest Control, Malware (ran most in SafeMode) and found, quarantined and removed two items:

Trojan.Win32.Agent.gen
Hoax,Win32.Renos.faql

When I rebooted to Safe Mode, the Start menu opened properly every time, but back in reg mode, was the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks, Rob

If you feel that your problem is malware related you should post in the Malware & Virus Removal forum - HJT logs are not permitted in other forums. I have moved your thread to that forum.

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in this thread.

ok, thanks.

At this point in time I really don't know whether this is malware related or not.

You used outdated HJT version, but I can see, you have some Norton leftovers to start with.

Download, and run Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

When done....

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

broni,

Why do you suspect Norton? Please be aware that on 5/26/09 I bought and installed a new Norton System Works 12 but only installed the 3 utilities that I have used forever:

Disk Doctor
WinDoctor
Speed Disk

I purposedly did not install the AV because I stopped using NAV several years ago, but still like their utilities (I now use Kaspersky AV).

Although I admit, the timing looks suspicious, I believe I must have rebooted several times since the install without a problem. The computer is only a couple months old and never had Norton on it previously.

I guess to be on the safe side, I'd like to remove SW first and then run the Norton removal tool to clean up everything before proceeding with Combo Fix.

Your comments please?

I can see at least couple of entries, which seems to belong to Norton Internet Security Suite.
I agree with your way of thinking.
Instead of me sorting out, which Norton process belongs to what application, uninstall whatever Symantec application you installed, run Removal Tool.
When we're done with sorting out your computer issues, please feel free to reinstall whatever you need.
