I am getting to the point where Chrome and I are going to part ways.

I backed up my 80,000 + bookmarks to an HTML file. I have no idea how such an accumulation could happen. There were 1,000's of duplicates and duplicate "Other Bookmarks" folders. I then opened the file in Dreamweaver and deleted everything except the ones that I wanted.

I then deleted all bookmarks on all of the devices I own and did a Chrome Sync reset which is supposed to remove all synced data stored on the Google servers. I signed out of Chrome on all devices. As far as I could tell, everything was gone. I opened and restarted Chrome several times yesterday. I then imported the revised backed up file into Chrome on my main desktop and all was good. Only the bookmarks I wanted appeared.

Late yesterday, all 80,000+ were back so I did it all again. Everything was fine when I closed last night. This morning... all 80,000+ were back.

Anyone have any thoughts before I dump Chrome and head to Firefox?

    Thanks

Don't know what to tell you,but horror stories like this over time is why I don't use chrome. Download FF and then Uninstall chrome from your machine.

I don't use Chrome but is there a "cloud" to which bookmarks are backed up?

I understand that my account data is on a Google server, but I have never been able to log in to any location to view it.
I did download bookmarks from takeout.google.com but the file was corrupt and the bookmarks HTML file couldn't be opened

Find your cloud bookmarks for chrome here:
    https://chrome.google.com/sync
You can delete ALL synced data at once, not individually.

    Local bookmarks are stored here:
    C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\
    Bookmarks & Bookmarks.bak

Turn OFF sync locally in chrome, on all devices.
Then go to your chrome profile folder and delete any bookmarks.bak files.
Then edit your bookmarks in chrome bookmark manager on your main device, not in an html editor. Just put all the bookmarks you don't want into a new folder and delete the folder. This will end up with just the bookmarks you want.
When done, turn sync back ON on your devices.

Thank you Tony. I didn't get a notice that you had replied. I will give your steps a go and get back to you.
