I have had many printers over the years and know I want an inkjet.

However, I want to try to avoid a problem I am having right now with my Canon-960. It's an excellent printer, fast enough and clear enough BUT it has the same problem that I've found with other Canons: the paper feed.

It does not always feed the paper when it should and I have to tease it, sometimes restart the print, etc. This happens usually with used paper (second side) but even sometimes with new paper. I try to be sure the paper is flat, no creases or folds but nothing seems to help.

Are front feed printers any more reliable? And if so which?

I use an Epson, but I have found this to only be a problem if I use the cheap store brand paper.

I have never had it happen when I use the good paper.

I have a Canon MP160 and haven't had the problem you describe. It hasn't missed a beat yet and I have used cheap paper as well as "the good stuff ".

For text I prefer the samsung (ML-1430 old) laser printers. Fast and clear text.

For printing pics I use the canon i560. Use all types of paper and photo paper with no problems.

If it is a roller feed printer the rollers may have got shined up and are slipping. Had that problem with my HP Deskjet 520 - fine sandpaper busted the glaze a treat.

Method I used - insert sheet of fine abrasive paper into printer tray - press print and hold onto the paper so the rollers skid and deglaze. Basic, brutish, but works :)

Another satisfied Canon user here. I got my daughter a Pixma 500(?). It's no longer sold but I found it to be an awesome ink jet.

You mention using the second side. Information I got from a copier technician was that the two side of printer/copier paper are not the same. The way you would naturally open and take the paper out of a ream is the way it should be fed into the printer.

If you re-feed the paper to print on the reverse side, the print may be coming off on the rollers. I would at least make certain the print was completely dry before re-feeding it into the printer.

My daughters' printer (laser) seems to be having a different problem, several pages are feeding at once. I have found that it happens with paper left in the printer, not paper taken from the straight from the ream. My conclusion is that the paper left in the printer is picking up moisture from the air.

Everything else aside, I think Pete hit the mark. When the rollers get dirty (ink buildup, etc) they can play havoc with paper feeding and leave markings on the paper. This applies to the small home printer, office copier, and industrial printing presses (which I work with daily).

Its a good idea to clean the rollers from time to time and Pete's use of the sand paper.........haven't tried that but I will next time just to see the result.

Clear your rollers - I don't recommend alcohol - with the sand paper or see if there is a Printer supply near you and get some roller wash [better yet, go to your local newspaper and see if you can get a little roller wash in a small glass container; a few ounces will last a long time -- they just might let you have some]

I edited my post above - can't imagine why I wrote 'very abrasive paper' :( Should have written 'fine abrasive paper' - very coarse likely to overstrain the printer feed drive.

Should also point out that the feed rollers on the HP 520 are ~1 1/2" dia - much smaller on modern printers.
