Changing Dekstop/Tile Icons in Win8

I'm getting around to personalizing Windows 8, but I cannot get custom Icons to display right. I can select them using the browse context menu but it only updates it to the default blank page icon, not the actual icon.

Worth noting that all default windows icons work, but none of my own do.

The method i'm using is grabbing an appropriately size png off bing search (i've tried 48x48, 72x72 and 128x128) and convert it to .ico using convertico.com (probably not the most secure site but i felt better than grabbing one of those "icon packs" loaded with all sorts of malware) I've tried fancy graphics and a single solid color.

Not a huge deal but i wondered if any of you had any insight. Google didn't provide very relevant results (fyi i've tried it on multiple different shortcuts and it didn't work for any of them)

Thanks for the help mitch but that is what i was trying to do at first.The problem was that it just wouldn't display any icons other than the default windows choices.

Its really not a huge deal, the default icon choices are more than adequate I was just hoping to be able to make some custom icons to pretty up my start screen. I might figure it out eventually.
