    Good to hear the problem's been resolved. Thanks for letting us know.

    As far as the SATA goes, I've seen PCI-E SATA adapters.

    Well done - bit of a mystery as to how the pins got bent - I doubt your friend had fiddled in the case!

    Suggest to her to download Start8 - there is a free trial and only $4.99 to buy - I would not be without on my laptop. Windows 8 will then have the 7 start button and menu and boot direct to the desktop. Those pesky apps will still be there, but out of sight unless required.
