By the way Pete, before I made this post, i.e. the second part about my new cd drive, I noticed a lot of queries in google by others with the same problem, so I suspect that your pointing me in the right direction may be also helpful to others with the same problem.
I would offer this further piece of advice. Step 2a in the KB tells you to look for the Volume {GUID}, or string in laymans language, with 32 characters and tells you to change the value in the "Value Data Box" to 1 (mine was wrongly set at 3).
The KB notes that there may be more than one Value string, and in fact I had two.
    Both will have 32 characters.
I changed with the first one (by double clicking 'drive type' on the right hand pane) listed and it made no difference. So I then changed the first one back to 3, and did the same process with the second string. Only then did it work. Then the 'Recording' tab appeared on the drive's 'properties' and I was able to tick the box by "Enable CD recording on this drive ".
Pete, I don't know if you have used this process yourself, but do you know whether I was right to change the first string or {GUID} back to 3, after I succesfuly changed the second {GUID}?.
Sorry if have made all this a bit complicated, but I'm sure you can follow what I have said.
Once again thanks for a great tip.
PS I have two spaces for cd drives so maybe thats why there were two strings.
