Suddenly I have no way to turn off my PC. I have lost the sleep/ shut down selection and now have only lock, log off and switch users on the task bar. I would really like to go to bed now!! Help!

Strange. Then you would have to pull the plug.

You have to hold the button for 5 to 10 seconds to shut it off. Just pushing it won't usually do it.

It should still start the shutdown procedure, my guess is some sort of virus or corruption has occurred. I would back up all data before trying to shut off, as it may not start correctly next time.

Have you tried System Restore -a date before the problem began?
