I posted it before the last post ... but it apparently got lost ... and I can't find my copy ... and it takes so hellishly long to run! Started at ~6:30pm and it is only 23% done! :(

Now my wife discovered that she has the bug in her laptop so I am trying to duplicate what we have done there, too.

Guess I haven't been living right!!

Broni,

The Kaspersky scan is going so slow, at this rate it will take another 8 hrs. at least. What time do you get to work tomorrow?

OK. If you look at Kaspersky's scan, there are some suspicious files in several Eudora folders. Since I don't want to mess up your mail by removing whole folders, you'll simply have to be careful while dealing with your mail, especially where it includes any kind of attachments. When you're done with sorting out your mail, simply empty all folders.

Other than that...

Your computer is clean :)

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn off System Restore:

- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore ".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista and 7:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C: ")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK

2. Restart computer.

3. Turn System Restore on.

4. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

5. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!

6. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

7. Run defrag at your convenience.

8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

9. Please, let me know, how is your computer doing.

Broni,

Many thanks for your help, Our PC is infection free as you said. :) From my naïve point of view it was a long process.

We haven’t cleaned up the email-worms as yet but they don’t pose a problem. I was surprised that they were in the email directories Out.mbx.001 & 002. I would have assumed that they would be in attachments "¦ our email software, Eudora, keeps attachments in a separate folder.

In the process of cleaning up our system you had me use a series of programs: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, GMER, HijackThis, ComboFix, and Kaspersky's scan. What different aspects of the process do each provide. Some seem to duplicate others "¦ like HijackThis and Kaspersky's scan.

I read some threads in CNET forums wrt Combofix and the advice was to stay away from it if you are not an expert. Seems a number of people clobbered their system before reading the recommendation.

I downloaded Kaspersky's scan because it takes so long for the Online scan to download and update each time "¦ but even so, the scan is impossibly slow. Is there any way to speed it up?

Thanks again for all your help.

Chuck

You're very welcome :)
I can't really go into any details about used programs, because the less bad guys know, the better for us :)

That sums it up.

Kaspersky is a very thorough program, so it takes time to scan with it.

Good luck and stay safe :)
