Maybe I've been attacked by a trojan, but when I turned on my computer it doesn't get to the desktop. If I Control+Alt+Delete, it brings up a login pop up, but I cannot log in. Someone told me I need to build a new profile, but I don't know how. Does anyone have an answer?

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Do you have any other user profiles to log into?

Let us know if you can boot into Safe Mode (tap-tap-tap the F8 key just before you would normally see the Windows loading screen).

    Safe mode

Yes, I can tap, tap, tap F8 and sometimes get into a menu that allows safe mode and some other options. I tried opening with safe mode and it doesn't work either. Computer is Compaq Presidio. OS is Windows XP Home version, and I think there's a 2 or 3.

Hi BrianE. When you start the computer is Safe Mode can you log in under the administrator account? What happens when you try to log in to your user profile? Does it log you off when you log in or do you get an error message?

    Safe mode

Even when I try safe mode, the same blue "Welcome" screen is the only result. This screen has a button for "Administrator" and a button for "Compaq_user ". Neither button does anything except flip back to the same screen.

Only Control+Alt+Delete brings up a Microsoft log-in pop-up peopled "Compaq user." I suppose I could type in "Administrator" as User ID, but then what would I type as password? Then what?

If you press ctrl, alt, delete and you get the classic windows log in box try typing in administrator and leave the password blank and then hit ok. Can you log in now? If you can't then read this and see if you can get your problem resolved, Fix Windows XP Log On/Log Off Loop. :)

This last was extremely helpful. I guess there are a lot of ways one can find oneself in the XP log-in/log-out loop.

I'll be fine now. Thanks from Utah.

dude what you can do is for once use the ctrl+alt+del way to get logged in and then press windows+run and type msconfig and remove the uncessary apps from startup one of them might be an issue.
