I am trying to install Win7 Home Professional on my WinXP box. I have gone into the BIOS and changed the boot order so that it would boot to CD. I went so far as to disable all other boot options and only left the CD option. It still boots to WinXP.

I am not getting the usual "press any key to boot to CD" that I am accustom to, I am getting this in bright green; ODD0: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A and right under that is "press any key to continue ". Same thing happens if I hit a key or do nothing.

I can navigate to the Win7 DVD while XP is running, so I know the drive is working, and the disk is readable.

I have also done all the pre-work needed before converting to Win7. I am at the point in the process to actually install it, but can't boot to the DVD. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi TJGarner. You stated that you can navigate the Windows 7 DVD from within Windows XP. If that is the case what happens when you run setup.exe from the DVD? Does the Windows 7 setup start?

If the setup does start successfully then you can still install Windows 7 from the DVD even if you started the Windows 7 installation from within Windows XP. You can bypass trying to boot from the CD in the BIOS entirely and still perform a clean install of Windows 7.

Following on from Evan's post. If you haven't already done so I'd strongly advise running Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Additionally are you trying to install 32 or 64bit?

Finally please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

This does not mean the DVD is not corrupt, only that the directory structure can be read.

Thanks for the responses. Evan, my intent was to do a clean install, but didn't know how to go about that without using the DVD drive. Wildfire, as I stated in my original post, I did all the pre-work needed before converting to Win7 which included running the Advisor.

I figured out the problem. In the BIOS there were a large number of boot options that I could have selected. The ones at the top are the ones that I was most familiar with and didn't scroll down to the list. Since I couldn't get it to work, I checked out all the options and it was at that point it became clear what the problem was. There was a boot option for my specific DVD drive. When I placed the dot after the _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A boot option, I was able to successfully boot to the Win7 DVD - and preform the clean install. Though I don't know why the generic "CD-ROM" boot option didn't work with my specific drive, at this point I am running Win7 and I am completely happy.
