NTLDR is a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Microsoft Windows NT/2000/XP load. It is an essential file :)

Unfortunately I cannot check this as my computer stuff is all boxed up pending a house move on Monday, but one thought I had ....

When you copied your XP CD to your hard drive did you enable 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files' in Windows Explorer > Folder Options > View before selecting all to copy to the hard drive?

Without access to an XP CD right now I cannot be certain that that file and may be others are not hidden on the CD and would not be selected by Edit > Select All, although you should have received a warning re hidden files using this method.

If you still have the copy of the XP CD on your drive check if it contains ntldr.
