    Hello,
I have a friend's laptop here and he is running Windows XP. I took it home because it was running so slow and I thought I would clean it up running CleanUp, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, etc.
He installed AVG 2011 on this computer and since then he had problems. I uninstalled AVG 2011 and installed Avast Free Antivirus which seems to be running fine.

The problem is when I open Internet Explorer and click tools, Windows Update, I get a message saying, "Internet Explorer cannont display this web page."

I have tried to look on the Microsoft site for help but I can't seem to make sense of it. I also think there may be some type of spyware or trojan because sometimes the system just hangs up.

Could you please tell me where to start troubleshooting this problem?

    Thank you so much.

    Jean

Follow the instructions and the link below to have the PC thoroughly cleaned. In order to be sure you have got AVG completely removed you should download the AVG removal tool from here:

One the best free AV programs available is from microsoft.

    Hi,

I'm afraid there is more to the problem than I originially thought. I'm sure there is a trojan on it as it won't let me download and run a registry cleaner. I will do as suggested but I'm afraid I need to find a program to let me know if indeed this computer is infected with trojans. I also keep getting messages from Avast that they are stopping some malware.

Any more help would be great.

    Thanks.

Follow the instructions in the link I gave and you will receive all the help you need. If your infection is blocking downloads just open a new thread in that forum and explain the problem.

    Hi,

There is a lot more wrong with this computer than I originally thought. I'm sure there is some type of trojan on it. I have now posted the question in the Malware section after running all the programs they instructed me to do. I sure hope they can help me.

Thank you for your help and I'll close out this question now.
