Spreadsheet is on desktop - not a shortcut.

Clicking on it opens Calc but gives the following "Read-Error.
Format error discovered in the file in sub-document content.xml at 2,1248266(row,col). "

I tried to follow the post for same excel problem but there is no blocked place in properties.

When I click OK, Calc closes.

Have you tried opening Calc, itself, and using it to navigate to the desktop file?

The file is probably an xlsx file. The docx & xlsx formats are essentially zip files, containers, and the container holds xml files. You could try extracting the file contents using an archive program like 7zip or others and then correcting the xml file. Or just read the xml file in a text editor.

Thanks TonyT but the file is one that I have been using for years. Suddenly it started to not work. File name is Movies.ods.

Same concept, it's an archive with xml files. Do you have a backup? (Menu/Tools/Options/Load-Save/General - Always create a backup copy.)

You can make a copy of the file, rename it to Movies.zip & extract the contents.

That error in content.xml is a common one. Here's how others fix it:

    1. Make a copy of the .ods file
    2. Rename it as .zip
    3. Open it, extract content.xml
    4. Use emacs to open content.xml
    5. You should have a XML menu at the top of the emacs windows.
    6. Select “First error”. It should show you (in red) where the error is
By passing the mouse on it, it even explains the error (example: Duplicate)
Usually, the error is something like tag=“blabla”, in which “tag” is in red
    7. Delete the complete tag (including the blabla)
    8. Repeat #6
    9. A soon as there is no error any more, save the file
    10. Replace it in the .zip
    11. Rename the .zip into .ods

It should now work with LibreOffice.

Thanks for your efforts. This is way above my paygrade.

I deleted the whole mess and found an old backup of the file and reconstructed.

I tried the emacs thing, took two days just to figure out how to install it. When I got it installed, The xml file was so slow I didn't know if it had frozen ( which it did several times) or was just taking that long with the rotating blue circle.

Anyway I gave up and got it all out of my life.

I tried LINUX a couple of times and the jargon was just too much. Life is too short for that kind of hassle

    Happy NEW Year to you
