We need a little more information.

What type of connection do you have? ie how would you normally connect to the internet.

Modem (USB or NIC), Router (Wireless or NIC), Dialup?

I use a router that plugs into my computer next to where the mouse plugs in

    Looks like a LAN connection,

Start device manager (start->run-devmgmt.msc) and look inside (click the +), list any devices shown and whether or not there is ? or ! marks alongside.

Whilst you're at it you could supply your system specifications...

If this is your main system it would be helpful if you add your system details to your profile. Please click on the link and follow those instructions it could save some time when resolving this or further issues.

A common error is to forget to show your system details in your profile

If you do add your system specifications be sure to do the above :)

Most likely you did not install the chip set and network drivers that should be on a CD/DVD for your system/motherboard.

Have a look in device manager... any exclamation or question marks there?
