My C: drive is unreasonably full,l switched off system restore gaining 2gb of space. Giving me a total of 6.5gb free on a 50gb partition. I have transfered all important data to D: drive and performed disc cleanup a number of times. Defrag is set at a weekly schedule, temp files have been removed. How do I recover more usable space?

That would depend on your current setup...

Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

You mention a D: drive, how large is that and how much free space is available?

    Try this:
    TreeSize Free

I have set my Vista (C: drive) at 50GB, although I need to manage it. If you want to keep your data off your Windows (C drive), you need to monitor it somewhat carefully.

Find out what is going onto (filling) your drive.

Hello Matt - Thanks for your support - With the help of CCleaner I have retrieved another 2GB of space - Free space on drive is now 8.5gb - what is odd is this C: has no big space hungry programs and few amounts of data since most music and pics I have removed to the D: - Thank you

Post the files here or google them. I have done a Disc Cleanup after CCleaner and put a check in ALL the boxes and got more space. Try that then do a defrag and see what you end up with.
Also puting in your System Specs. helps us. Go to User CP near the top left of this page and fill out the info and be sure to save it afterwards.

I have a (main) 300GB HDD. As I said, partitioned as 50 GB for Vista. I have a D: and E: partition as well. I install whatever programs I can onto the D: and E: partitions. So for example, instead of installing Adobe Reader onto the C: drive, I change the path to D: or E:.

Think about uninstalling any programs off the C: drive that you don't have to be installed there and change their drive path during re-installation. I have done that very often in the past and it works fine. [D: is not another HDD is it? If you move programs to another HDD rather than another partition on the same HDD as C:, then you change HDD configuration, the programs won't work].

You can get Vista to move some folders, like the Temporary Internet Files folder. Let me know if you are interested in that.

If you have plenty of space on the D: drive, I would uninstall and re-install as many programs as I could there. Just note my proviso.

Just a small correction for you Flipin

It's an Hitachi HTS541612 not an Hitachi HT5541462.

Mattman's suggestion is probably your best course of action.
