Can't get the Cd drive to work

Im using an aptiva from about 1995-7 and the cd drive doesnt work just as you described:

Atari cdrom v1.0
yada yada yada

tcpdos.exe
cant find driver

vhdd0420.exe
cant find driver

yada yada yada

c:\mwave_c\vhdd0420.exe
cant find driver

c:\<some other file>

c:\dos\oakcdrom.sys
bad file or cammand
bad file or command
says that about 10 times and then goes to the user edit cursor eg flashing "| "
When i go to mscdex.exe it comes up with "/d:driver" to select driver but then it won't find the driver event though i have it right next to it

i put in "MSCDEX /dakcdrom(.sys)" and it still doesn't work

help me ... plzzzz
