OK, so I've done a system restore that actually gets the machine booting again. I think the problem may have been installing SuperantiSpware with the Norton antivirus ON................... but who knows?!

The PC is still very slow and unstable (applications close without warning, applications won't open, sudden reboots............. all very annoying!) As this now appears not to be due to any sort of malware, it looks like a reinstall is on the cards?

I think there may also a problem with USB port extension card - write failures and so on.

In the meantime, below is a HJT log. If you could tell me what to delete (unnecessary startups or anything else to improve this PC's performance) that would be great.

This will have to do until there's time and inclination for a reinstall!

Go in to msconfig and disable these startups and see if there is a change;

Sounds to me like there is a bit of file corruption happening there and a reformat may be your only recourse .

 

Sorry to be so dumb Crunchie. I need more detailed instructions how to get to msconfig and to do this in msconfig.

Go to Start | Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Select the When msconfig comes up, go to the startup Tab.
Uncheck the entries that I pointed out and then hit the apply button.
Ok out of msconfig and then restart the comp.
You will get a popup when the desktop loads telling you that you have made changes to your startups.
Put a tick in the lower left box, then ok out.
See if things are better now.

 

Thanks for this Crunchie. The start up is slightly faster. I think you may be right about file corruption though and the need for a reformat.
