Black Screen w/blinking cursor XP

Hi Kevro, Welcome to Windowsbbs!

Try pressing the F8 key on startup to bring up the advanced boot options menu. If the menu comes up try selecting Last Known Good Configuration and press enter. If the computer doesn't boot then press F8 on startup again but this time select Safe Mode and hit enter. Does the computer boot into Safe Mode?

If none of the advanced startup options work then have you gone into the computers BIOS and checked to see if the harddrive is recognized?

If the harddrive is recognized then do you have a Windows XP CD?

Will the computer boot into Safe Mode?

Is the hard drive recognised in the BIOS (setup) ?

When you attempt to boot do the hard drive and CD/DVD drive lights come on?

Did you make any changes to the computer - hardware/software immediately prior to this problem arising?

It would be helpful to post the model no. of your HP.
