In the Sony system reference manual, there is a page with an illustration of CMOS hardware with the caption:

The chart for CLR CMOS JUMPER

"the CLR CMOS Jumper clears the BIOS password setting.

    CLR CMOS Jumper settings
    Jumper Plug Position-----Function
    -----------------------------
    2-3--------------------Normal
    1-2--------------------Clear CMOS Password

I just downloaded KNOPPIX it looks right at 700 mb

I want to burn it to DVD.

    I bought memorex DVD-Rs

I put in both DVD and CD drives

but ImgBurn is not recognizing the DVD in either case.

And there were some strange comments at the bottom of the ImgBurn screen.

like "Where is your self-confidence? Are you stupid? "

    Is this normal?

I uninstalled ImgBurn and downloaded it again and reinstalled.

I put the dvd disk in the cd drive (Driver G) and checked properties

it showed the disk as full solid blue but said free space 0 bytes used space 0 bytes.

Exactly the same when I put the dvd disk in the dvd drive.

ImgBurn is not recognizing the disks and there seems to be something wrong with the Memorex disks, they were completely new and empty

Do these dvd-r disks have to be formatted?

I just checked my cd and dvd drives with no disks in them and they are both showing that the space is full.

I am considering uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with my driver recovery disk.

I am wondering if running Mint had anything to do with this.

    1. Mint has nothing to do with your CD drives and won't affect what they do.

    2. The Knoppix ISO is for CDs, not DVDs. You cannot burn it to a DVD because it's not a DVD ISO. 700 MB will fit onto a CDR.

    3. The jumpers that set Master/Slave are on the hard drive and the CDROM drives. The CLR CMOS Jumper on the motherboard has nothing to do with Master/Slave. It's a jumper for something else, do NOT NOT mess with it.

Burn Knoppix to a CDR. (do not use CDRW, DVDR or DVDRW)

this is a side question, but I am wondering why my dvd-r disks are not recognized by when I put them in my dvd drive.

Is your dvd drive a plain dvd drive or a dvd burner?

In the Sony Quickstart Manual it says the following in the troubleshooting section:

"Why doesn't my optical driver (DVD-RW or CD-RW) record at the highest speed?

If you are having difficulty formatting DVD-RW or CD-RW media for recording purposes, try changing the write speed to a lower setting. "

The marketing spec sheet says this:

    "DVD-ROM drive
    16X MAX DVD-ROM
    40X MAX CD-ROM

    CD-RW DRIVE
    16X MAX. WRITE/10X MAX REWRITE/40X MAX READ "

I am guessing this means I cannot burn a DVD, which means that I cannot burn UBUNTU and some other Linux versions. They might require buying an external DVD burner.

    I burned KNOPPIX to a CD-R.

The file collection looks ok in the CD drive.

But now I cannot boot up to the CD.

In the Boot window of BIOS the ATAPI is set to CD....

    Next is Maxtor, etc.

And it will not even boot up to the Mint CD anymore.

Can you try the simple test of booting a different computer from your "burned KNOPPIX CD-R "?

If it doesn't work there either, then you know the problem is your "burned KNOPPIX CD-R ".

If it does work though, then you know the problem lies with your computer.

    From your manual:

There should be an option on the last page that says something like "Load Setup Defaults ". Select that and save the settings.

The default for that computer is to boot the TOP CDROM drive bay first. It may be the CD/DVD drive or it may be the CDRW drive. It doesn't matter which one is the top drive.

Per the manual, when using the Sony recovery CDs, the TOP drive must be used. Thus, only the top drive is bootable.

Set the bios to defaults and boot the Knoppix CDR from the top drive bay.

Some computers with multiple CDROM or DVD drives can only have one set to be bootable. In your comp, it's the CD or DVD drive in the top of the case.

We already know that I was able earlier to boot from the Mint CD in the second drive, the cd drive. Now I am not. The cd burn was also set to "verify" on the ImgBurn dialog box and the MB count and files look right.

Then you must have changed the settings in BIOS in some way. I concur with Tony here. You should load setup defaults and that will take you back to the way it should be to begin with. You should then try your Mint Cd since you know it works and then try your Knoppix Cd.

    Tony's advice was perfect.

    this is coming through Knoppix

I pressed F5 to load the default then f10 to save and reboot

I put the knoppix disk in the top drive, which is the DVD ROM drive. not the cd write rive.

the black sony screen still says there is a hardware error.

when I press F1, it takes me to the knoppix screen.

Knoppix seems more friendly than Mint.

But my desktop is bit hard to find. I have to first find the C drive.

I cannot find out how to shut down. there is no little drop down menu in the upper right as there is in Mint. I will just have to turn off power.

You don't need to turn off the power. In Knoppix, the menus are starting from the bottom left corner just like windows.

Most all Live Linux CD systems don't have a shutdown link. Usually there's a "Log Off" link in a menu. Use Log Off and it should initiate automatic Log Off > Shutdown > eject CD functions.

yes, I found both shutdown and log off in the lower left menu.

Would you know where the Knoppix Manual is?

F1 does not work for me.

I must have done something. I clicked something in the lower left menu called "restart 3d compiz" Don't know if this changed anything.

but after that whenever I tried to open an application I got a screen to adjust the background colors.

I was able to open .txt files using leafpad in Mint. Knoppix has leafpad but when i tried to open a txt file it said it could not open it. Maybe I should open Leafpad then go to the top left and say open file....?

So far I cannot find any instruction manual in knoppix.net. I may have to join the forum.

There doesn't seem to be a manual as such - but there is a lot of info on the website and the forum. Personally, I found Knoppix easy and intuitive to use.

The great thing about live Cds though is if it all goes pear shaped you can jsut reboot and start all over again.
