Restoring XP did the trick, it works fine now, but it's just a shell. I've tried connecting to the internet using the wizard, but the only option that would work is "Use a CD supplied by your ISP" but I somehow lost the CD. Is this all that I need to do to make this work? It seems really simple for something that's always seemed such a complex problem to me.

Also, I tried to install the software for my Motorolla Modem last night, and it says the system doesn't recognize my ethernet card, I assume this is because I don't have the driver for it. Should it be in the software supplied by Dell? If it's somehow on my machine, where can I find it so I can determine if it needs a driver? I assume that this is going to take a long time to fix, some things are just never easy are they?

I have cable internet supplied by my ISP, I assume when you say DSL, that cable internet is also included. The internet is working fine, my PC just won't go there, I have to be missing something.

I am not at all familiar with cable - not common this side of the pond and certainly not in my area :) You may well need the CD supplied by your ISP, but as I posted earlier ....
Whether or not cable is different I really have no idea - I would think not, but ....

Your ethernet card is not recognised and without it you will not connect - I would have expectd Windows to have installed a basic driver, but if it did not 'see' it then clearly it would not.

Look in Device Manager - is there an entry for Network Adaptors? - if so expand the heading (double click on it or click on the + sign.

Is there a warning flag (! mark on a yellow ground) against Network Adaptor?
I think Dell supply a Driver disk with their computers, in which case the required driver should be there. If not download from Dell, but the driver will be of no use if the ethernet card is not recognised - check Device Manager as above.

I'll look into Network Adaptors and let you know, I am using the computer in my complex's business center to check this thread at the moment so I'm not able to report back as often as I would like to. I'll keep you updated, thanks again.

Final Update: I had to go to best buy and buy a new ethernet card, it turns out that the driver for my card wasn't updated and it had no IP address. After I had installed the card I was able to update all my drivers from the dell site. Thanks for all your help through this entire process. I'd like to think that now I can fix my PC with what I've learned but will always come back here for some help from the experts.
