I also installed AVG 8.0 Free. No problem. Both my computers run XP Pro SP3. In both cases AVG 7.5 was uninstalled, rebooted and AVG 8.0 was installed. No other clean up was done other than the uninstall.

On the desktop SP3 was a simple upgrade. The laptop, SP3 was installed using a slipstreamed XP Pro SP3 CD that I burned recently

In either case, AVG 8.0 Free seems to be working with no problems to report. Also in both cases the toolbar was not installed.

    Long time AVG user.
    On Vista...
I tried to do it several ways, but my final try went like this...
Uninstalled AVG 7.5, went through registry, removing any trace of it.
Suspecting, maybe PC Tools ThreatFire was a culprit, uninstalled, cleaned registry from any traces.
Disconnected from the internet, disabled Comodo.
Started AVG 8.0 installation. Opted out of any toolbar/link scanner.
At some point installation insist, I have another antivirus installed!
    Ignored warning message.
    Installation finishes.
    Tried to open AVG.
It refuses, citing "side-by-side" installation conflict.
Investigated "side-by-side" error possible causes for hours.
One of the hints mentioned Visual C++ 2005. Reinstalled. Installed Visual C++ 2008.
    No dice.
As I said before, it took two days on, and off, and I just gave up, which is really unusual for me.
    End of the story.

Used to use AVG, then upon the recommendation of someone I know at PC Mag, about 9 mos back, I switched to Avast. I never had problems w/ AVG, and can say the same for Avast, but then I'm not surfing smut, so maybe that's why.

I've been going nuts trying to find out why my computer has been slow to boot and run. I've been running everything I had to check for viruses, spyware, malware, crapware, etc. etc. etc.

Taking a break and decided to kill some time and relax by reading some here. Found this thread. Wow. Wished I had found it before i did a format/reinstall.

Yeah, I installed AVG 8.0 but didn't associate the problems with the program. Duh!

So, can anyone direct me to a link for the 7.5 version? All links I find go to the 8.0 version. If not then I guess I'll try one of the others mentioned here. I've used AVG my entire computing life and hate to change now but version 8.0 isn't working for me. I uninstalled it and the computer worked fine. I just need a antivirus program now.

    Thanks.

Hi guys, I posted earlier re AVG8.0. To recap I downloaded AVG8.0 to Desktop then followed Mike's instructions and cleaned everything out. I disconnected ADSL cable and shut down all Security systems then installed AVG8.0. I did this on 3 home PC's running XP Home and no problems as with installation of SP3. Neil. :D

I have used AVG for years, but AVG 8 has started to give me problems. It works fine for a few weeks, then I get a message that "I'm not protected "!!
The AntiVirus and AntiSpyware components are 'out of date' even though I run an update and it is successful according to AVG and the Resident Shield is 'not active'. What I have done in the past is uninstall/install AVG and it runs OK for a while. My OS is Win XP SP3, and I do use ZA for a firewall and Ad Aware, SpyBot and Spywarebaster for further malware checks. AVG is the only antivirus software that is constantly running. Is it time for a change? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try Avira - I dumped AVG on a couple of my comps for that and have had no issues.

Hi Pete, with Avira have you found that the scanner stops cold when a suspicious file is found, and waits for user input before continuing (instead of completing the scan and then asking)? There do not seem to be any options on the handling of these issues.

    Larry

I have not noticed that, but I have to say that I rarely, if ever see a suspicious file found on any of my computers. In addition Avira is installed on both my laptop and Vista desktop which I rarely use - my main box has NOD32.

I work on the principle that providing you scan the whole computer immediately after installing a new av there should be no need for further full scans if the av then does it's job as a resident scanner and the defs are regularly updated. Once in a blue moon I make a full scan - nothing has ever been found :)

Pete, I'm glad to hear you say this, as it's exactly the way I've always seen it.
Not that my thinking makes it right. ;)
